After penning a deal with research specialist Nielsen, is Sony venturing down the 'Big Brother' route by providing user information for the sake of improved profit?

Dave Karraker, spokesman for Sony, said Nielsen would have access to data from the PlayStation 3 systems as well as the PlayStation Network. This data will then be used to measure "behaviour patterns, the effectiveness of advertisements in games, and some basic demographic information such as the user's age."

It isn't going to be Big Brother though is it, or have I misunderstood? Sounds like having access to this information will eventually lead to being beneficial for us the gamers, as they'll see how we get angry and so on.

It's exactly the same thing credit cards and loyalty cards do, keeping track of what you're up to at any given time.

Yeah...Well, I'm pretty sure that Microsoft does this sort of thing with the 360...

At least it looks like it might lead to better stuff, since they'll learn what we like, and what we don't...

Still, I'd rather not be watched personally >_>

The article makes it seem as though Sony is giving you no privacy, almost as if they're spying on you or some bullshit like that. Really, they just want a bit of research to see what affects the gamers positively or negatively. For example, nobody uses the vehicles in a certain game, then the next time they make a game like that they'll make the vehicles easier to drive or more useful. Stuff like that. Ultimately, it's good for us.

As long it dosen't monitor everything you do, imagine how embarrasing it would be if they monitor you downloading porn.

    Not that I do that

I'll be playing a game and all the sudden a Satellite image falshes on my screen, showing my house. WTF? "SONY IS MONITORING YOU. PLEASE ENJOY YOUR GAME" and the screen returns to Resistance: Fall of Man.

Haha, highly doubtful but would be annoying, its just for them to see if there getting all the age ratings right and to make sure its suitable for certain viewers

Not really a big fan of in-game advertisements. Just take a look at Battlefield 2142 to see how unsuccessful it can be.

This sounds interesting but yet strange at the same time. Would there be any way of being able to see these results once they have been done as then that would be good ^^

First Sony stumbles on the online front, then they make a brilliant come back with Home, just to make us all wonder just how much watching they are doing during your time online. It's like friggin built in spyware. Not good news, imo.
