Now that's a big number.

With more than 180,000 discs sold in Europe, Sony Pictures Home entertainment attributes the rise to the release of the PS3.

As reported by Tech Digest, more than 180,000 SPHE films have now been sold in Europe. According to Sony, sales have soared by over 1000 per cent since the PS3 launched in March.

The company also said SPHE titles account for more than 50 per cent of all Blu-ray discs sold in the UK, France and Spain.

"The launch of the PS3 had a tremendous impact on Blu-ray software sales across the board," said Matt Brown, executive VP at Sony Pictures.

Not much of a suprise to be honest. I mean if you've just splashed out the cash needed to get a Playstation 3, surely you would invest a little bit more money in order to buy the blue ray films to get the full potential out of your console.

And I was beginning to wonder how the PS3 wasn't actually helping the Blu-ray sales.

Blu-ray discs aren't very reliable... but they major increase isn't such a surprise, I mean, they are extremely versatile.

No surprise that the PS3 is helping the sales of blu-ray DVDs. If I had a PS3 I know I'd be shelling out a little extra money to get blu-ray DVDs instead of regular DVDs.

Good God...1000%, I've never seen a percentage that high I'd rather get Blu-ray than DVD or HD-DVD now. It's like what the PS2 did for us years ago, a cheap DVD player.

      Maybe it's just a typo.

Even if it was a typo, say an extra zero, still, 100% is DOUBLE. This news is still huge, no matter which way you try to spin it.

The sheer number of PS3 users out there completely overruns HD-DVD players, which are actually outselling regular Blueray players. Big titles like Pirates 1 and 2 didn't hurt Blueray sales, either.

Well most companies that sell DVD's only brung them out due to the PS3, so it shows a good sign for the PS3 aside the gaming and for companies that have been struggling to sell Blu Ray's, they should take there hat off to Sony for this
