A new (more preferable?) form of demo may be on its way. Sony has filed a patent detailing a new way for players to get a hands-on preview with a game. It gives the player an almost complete game that slowly removes or degrades features until the player decides to buy it.

Sony appears to be working on a new kind of video game demo. A patent filed by SCEA details a system that gives users a full or nearly complete game to play with, but slowly removes features until you buy it.

The software has customizable triggers that disable features after a set number of plays or lapsed play time.

That's actually an interesting idea. Haha, on some demos I can get enough out of the game to just keep replaying the demo anytime I need my fix for that particular thing. A good way to make people like me have to go buy the game or find a workaround, haha.

Seems like a lot of effort for very little change in my opinion. Still, could work from a marketing perspective I guess.

Gran Turismo 5 demo got released today, the whole game is there to download, all the cars and tracks and stuff. Just one problem, after about an hour or so the "X" button loses it's functionality and you can't accelerate. Good news though, you can reverse your way across the whole track just takes a bit of practice.

I remember the Viva Piñata demo pretty much let me play the whole game without being able to save (though that would not work too well on games that end).
