In a recent interview, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto discussed why his first prioritity is creating fun games rather than focusing on online gaming experiences.

"Starting from the launch of the Wii, we became more proactive," Miyamoto explained. "I think it is obvious that when everyone is connected online, there will be enormous opportunity for me to create something really unique. But my job is to try to entertain as many people as possible, and I see all Wii owners as the audience. Of course, we have 'Mario Kart,' which can be played online by multiple people. So we are gradually expanding the experiences using the internet, but my own personal focus is to try to entertain people, even if they are not connected to the Internet. That is my first priority."

I actually agree with his stance on the matter, although there's still a serious lack of good online games on Nintendo systems.

What frustrates me about Nintendo is that they always take a stance against something and then end up giving in only when they see how wrong they were. First it was against blood in their games, then they didn't want to switch to disc format with N64, now it's the whole online gaming thing. Why are they so damn stubborn?

Awesome, you've completely misinterpreted the article.

Nintendo and Shigeru are not against online gaming (regardless of how ridiculous their friend code system is). If they were there would be no online for their systems. What Shigeru is saying is that he places priority on the offline content and then afterwards they'll see if online is suitable for whatever he's working on at the time. Which is a perfectly fair view to take.

Doesn't that go without saying? I don't think people who make games that can be played online say "I know this is a peice of crap but hey, it's an online game".

Devs sometimes go into a project with the online aspect firmly in mind where it's not just attached afterwards. This doesn't mean companies will intentially create crap games on the basis of using online content to hide it. It means that online content is part of the plan from the start.

Shigeru clearly prefers not to do that.

I tend to agree with that tbh. Most times same console multiplayer are better than online games.

I prefer games that have really good online and shit single player rather than the opposite TBH.

Obvious exceptions are open world games like oblivion etc.
