The next Playstation 3 firmware update is going to remove the "Install Other OS" feature due to security concerns. The PS3 Slim was already missing this feature but now all version of the PS3 will have it removed.

The next PS3 firmware update will remove a unique feature of the Playstation 3 that may seem like a bad April's Fool joke to some while many other Playstation 3 owners probably won't care The 3.21 firmware update coming on April 1 will remove the ability for PS3 owners to install another operating system (OS).

There are a lot of people jumping all over this announcement.

I can understand where a couple of people are coming from, people that are actually using this.

But good *bleep*ing lord, was the ability to install Linux on your PS3 seriously a deciding factor in your purchase? It always seemed like a kind of throwaway feature to me, one Sony just threw in there because they could.

I don't condone removing features from products in any way after purchase but this has seriously been blown out of proportion. Like everything on the internet. I've already seen the term "class action lawsuit" get thrown around regarding this. Seriously people?.

Yeah people are going apeshit over this.

But whatever, I will enjoy my PS3 why others are sooking over the removal of imo a useless feature of the PS3.

If PS3 owners choose not to upgrade to firmware update 3.21, they will lose the ability to do the following:

    * Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
    * Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
    * Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
    * Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
    Uh-huh...
