Nintendo have recently asked the creators of a fan-made Pokemon MMO entitled "Pokenet" to shut down their website and surrender the pokedev.org domain name used for the game.

Another fan project based on a beloved game series has fallen. Nintendo has issued a cease-and-desist notice to the creators of the open source Pokémon MMO Pokenet, requiring that they take down their website and surrender the pokedev.org domain name used for the game, claiming unauthorized use of Nintendo trademarks.

I can understand protecting one's property but I swear Nintendo is the freakin nazi's when it comes to it.

Actually, abolishment of property seems more like a communist thing to do rather than a nazi one.

      Also, Godwin's law!

Wouldn't this website just strengthen the Pokemon following? Wouldn't that make Nintendo more profitable?

Yeah, but you could make the same argument that it detracts from sales of official Pokemon games and merchandise.

Also Nintendo would probably be interested in stealing the idea for themselves

Only problem is that they probably won't venture into that field for a while, or at least not make it as fun/free. I could see a Pokémon MMO full of micro-transactions. To make it to Kanto you have to buy the SS ticket which costs $5.

Nintendo wouldn't even allow a fan-made Zelda movie to exist... despite it being free and the creators' attempts to come to a compromise with the company. There's no way they'd let an MMO about Pokemon exist either.

This is kinda different from the fan made Zelda film. It's more than possible for a Pokemon MMO to steal potential income from Nintendo as gamers mmight opt for the free online experience instead of their handheld installments.

Though obviously they're going to feel heat from people for not having their own MMO project underway, because it's not as if there's a direct official alternative.

That's... kind of the point. They killed off something harmless in comparison. Flow of logic.
