Many random stores nationwide have mysteriously started selling the 60GB Playstation 3 system for $499. In many of their systems, the price has strangely been lowered by exactly $100. Is this news of an impending price cut? Is it big news for the console wars?

Has the price cut already been put into effect? Potentially, yes. One of our readers has let us know that he was able to get his hands on a 60GB PS3 for no more than $499.99 at a Target today. In our attempts to verify this we called the store he bought it from. They confirmed that the 60GB PS3 was, indeed, in the shop's system at the price of $499.99. Whether this is an error on the individual shop's part, with the price drop being put into effect early, we weren't sure.

We are currently in the process of calling more stores nationwide, to see how isolated this event really is. We will update this post as and when we get more information. If true, then this is an excellent start for what promises to be an excellent E3. Already Microsoft's keynote is overshadowed by Killzone 2. A pricedrop by Sony before the event even starts only adds to the pressure.

[UPDATE 1] A Kansas Target has the 60GB PS3 in its computer at $599

[UPDATE 2] Another tipster has told us that today they sold two at Circuit City at $499. Confused, the manager called it in and got a confirmation that it was correct. We are in the process of verifying this.

[UPDATE 3] A Target store in Rancho Cucamonga in California has confirmed that the 60GB PS3 is in their system for $499. It looks like there's no pattern to which stores are and aren't offering the price cut.

I said this b4 and its yes, but it can't be a sale if 6+ stores are doing it, there is something up in the air.

I just think some stores feel it's hard to sell a video game system for so much money but we will probably see a price cut soon anyway.

Still not worth it at FIVE HUNDRED YOU-ESS DOLLARS.

ROFLWAFFLES THUMBED DOWN FOR VALID OPINIONS HURRRRRR

For future reference, I am completely aware of the shortcomings of the 360 and the Wii. The Wii has it the worst but nobody quite seems to mind. The 360 also has issues *cough*redrings*cough* but it's also begging for some obvious features.

Enjoy your free "quality" PSN network.

The 360 Elite is also just about $500. Why isn't the PS3 worth it? Please don't say it has no games because both the PS3 and the 360 are getting more than a couple great looking games this year.

The Elite's obviously for anyone that has money to burn. It's nothing but a huge hard drive.

Please don't say it has no games
THE HELL IT DOES. There is nothing compelling, exclusive-wise, to get on the PS3 at the moment. An FPS isn't worth $700+ unless, like, you know, Linux on the PS3 lets me actually run Photoshop or Word.

        OMG! OMG! METUL GEER FOR!
You'll tire of it when you beat it. Everyone knows it's beatable in a rental. And yes, that's one example.

Like I said, both systems are getting good games later this year. I could easily say OMG OMG HALO3, but I would just look like another ignorant fanboy. You can say what you want about the Elite, but I see it as a second attempt to somewhat match what Microsoft originally said was unnecessary in the PS3 (large storage space, HDMI, native 1080P). You can get tired of any game when you finish it, but a good game is a good game and if it appeals to you, then thats it.

reenee why are you spreading your hypocritical fanboyism post on here. You do know everyone of your posts gets thumbs down cause you bash every system. $499 is a great buy for the ps3.

Are you kidding? The Blu-Ray player is more than enough reason to get one...what with all the other Blu-Ray players on the market at like $1000. It's just like the good deal with the PS2 years ago.

Are your precious movies with little to no difference in offerings from DVDs really worth the bloated $30-$40? Nice job putting movie playback over VIDEO GAMES, by the way.

No, it's purely for downloading all that Hi-Def material available in their video marketplace.

so what exactly was your point?
Paying more than $600-$700 for a 15-20 hour single-player scenario isn't quite worth the money. MGS4 isn't quite well-known for its multiplayer longitevity and Halo's offerings feel really dumbed down. You're all better off when Marathon gets on Live, by the way.
      • 0
        FRoGBuster Jul 8, 07
actually, MGS3 had great online multiplayer, so I expect an even better experience on the fourth. Even the offline-single player was worth more than three run throughs.
  • 1
    iLLmatic Jul 8, 07
I think it is worth the money. For one, Metal Gear Solid is simply a great game, one of the best available. Secondly, nobody is going to buy a $500-600 system for one game. I don't understand why you're basing this on MGS4 and MGS4 alone. There are plenty more to choose from.

This is great news for everyone who was holding out for a price drop. Starting with August there are a lot of great games coming out for the PS3 that people can look forward to. Of course, there are a lot of great games out for it now for those who don't own ANY of the "new" systems.

    iLLmatic Jul 8, 07
I think $500 is a great price for the PS3, if Sony can handle the difference. The PS3 and the 360 Elite are obviously very comparable, yet at the same time, Sony would obviously step up and say that architecturally, the PS3 offers much more than the Elite for $20 more. Aside from all the mud the PS3 has been walking through in the media, it has sold faster than either the PS1 or PS2 within the same period of time. It confuses me how this can go overlooked. With games like Lair, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, MGS4, Uncharted, and Killzone 2 all coming out this year, I think a $500 price tag would help sales tremendously. Its already doing well at $600. Yes, it hasn't sold as many as the 360, but it is selling as fast.
    • -2
      Final Blade Jul 8, 07
Not to mention 6 stores has already dropped the price at $100 less and its going great. I think this is something good for sony.
  • 0
    FRoGBuster Jul 8, 07
Okay, so the 60GB is now 500. Still too expensive for me. This is true.
But anyone paying attention to the 20GB? $400? Hey, I'll take that.
as for the lack of hard drive space, I know I can replace it with another ATA HDD that has 80GB for $40, and probably even cheaper in the future when I'll feel like replacing it. OR I could even use one of my spare external usb hard drives.
So, don't just think $500, know that there's also now a $400 PS3! Go get 'em.

and if they do a second drop for the holiday season, it will be in the 300's! AWESOME.

      Final Blade Jul 8, 07
depends where you are. 20Gb is discontinued in America. So that price isn't important. Besides there are a few items not available for the 20GB compared to the 60GB. You may not like the pice cut currently but im sure people will pay it since its $100 less. And use the rest for games. Its a good buy really. Like i said b4 its already making great sales in 2 days.

        FRoGBuster Jul 8, 07
If you go to the gamestop website, they have 20GB available though.

What are the "items" not available on the 20GB? I've never heard about these differences.

    InnerDemon Jul 8, 07
well from what i have heard from my friends, there arent a whole lot of "awesome" games out for it, i personally wouldn't know, i don't have one, but have thought about getting one since they came out. but i think the drop in price is due to the lack of people buying them due to huge prices, and the stores needed to get rid of them to make some money. that is my 2 cents and my thoughts.

    tidus04 Jul 8, 07
Hmm, good to hear this that some places have lowered the price but really I dont think it will make a massive difference to the current sales, maybe by a couple but nothing major.

    Existenz Jul 8, 07
Well considering most people were buying the 20Gb because of its price and were thinking about buying the 20Gb because of its price, now the PS3 is the price of the 20Gb it should sell like hotcakes.

*points to Existenz's post* Unfortunately Europe and Australia don't have the 20GB consoles, so we are stuck with buying the expensive 60GB ones.

    Aaanyways ...
What is with all the "Thumbs Down" on people's comments? Some of the comments are completely valid, and make perfect sense.

Is this only a price-cut in America? Or are other countries soon to follow?

I agree with tidus04 ... I can't imagine a major boost in the PS3's sales. It's still quite a fair bit of money to pay (that's still $800 over here in Australia, which could buy a whole 2nd hand car)
  • 0
    Bale Fire Jul 8, 07
umm Gothic girl, I don't know about you but the PS3 is $1000 Australia dollars wherever I go

I'm talking about after the price-cut. After the price-cut it will be around $800 (if the price is reduced in Australia, that is)

    Rinkydink Jul 8, 07
Well like I have said in the past, the PS3 definitely needs a price cut if sales are to benefit them more. Even so, I myself would wait a bit longer until more great games are out for the PS3 before I consider getting one. It should be pretty much worth getting one by Christmas for sure.
  • 2
    dcbake Jul 8, 07

but that's the thing, MGS3 was a better experience, and though it was only one year, it was well worth it and I have no regrets, as I have not played a better online multiplayer since. I would assume they'll support MGS4 online for longer. MGS3 was just a test run for them anyways - to polish up the online for 4.

Ok, Reenee, you have like four or five of your posts in this removed, which means that other people are agreeing with Finalblade98.

Anyway, not to the article. This is awesome, I really hope that this is an actual price drop for everywhere, because I dont think the EB in my town would lower the price.

And its servers went down extra-frigging soon. Isn't SOCOM still going?
No, it's because of the fact that most players abuse the headshot kills and basically pissed everybody who didn't have enough time to work on their skills. It's plaging the MPO servers as well. I think I can say that if this problem was fixed, the servers would still be running.

I was thinking of putting down some money for a console in GS, I might as well buy one of these PS3s when they're on sale.

    Mister Ivanovich Jul 8, 07
I'm almost sure that this means there's a price drop being announced at E3. Most stores aren't crazy enough to drop the price of a PS3 by $100 just because it's not selling AS WELL as they had hoped.

Now that i think about it, I guess 100 down is a pretty decent price drop, but I didn't think about how it'd still look so damn expensive. "$500" damn. I can buy it and play one game for the summer. Haha, or I can play like 15-30 games on the PS2 that has a lot of classics I haven't played yet, PLus the new games that are great and still coming out. Hmmm... maybe it's not time for the PS3 yet?
