It has been officially confirmed by Sony that there is a smaller PS2 in the making. Yes smaller than the Slimline PS2. Japan's Nikkei Business Daily reported that the new model is lighter by 300 grams, so will you purchase the new PS2 or continue saving up for the PS3?

The slimline PStwo is already too small for comfort for some, but Sony has managed to make it even smaller! Japan's Nikkei Business Daily reports today that the new model SCPH-79000 of the PS2 hardware features a drop in weight from 900 to 600 grams. The system's AC adapter has also dropped from 350 to 250 grams.

The paper reports that the weight loss was achieved by a reduction of parts. This has also resulted in a drop in production costs, something that's sure to benefit Sony's bottom line.

Sony has started shipping the new hardware, which is visually identical to previous versions.

Why? Just...why? The PSP is pretty much a portable PS2, they should focus more on that than a third remake of the second Playstation. Meh, their company. I mean sure, the PS2s are still selling strong, but how long do they expect that to last?

What's so awesome about it? It really serves no purpose. It's as pointless as the GBA Micro if you ask me <_

I always had the original PS2, until recently when I gave it to my friend after purchasing the PS3. Another friend had it though. It was so weird to look at. And now I have this huge PS3....

Yeah, I have a bulky PS2 from launch as well. I thought it was so sleek and cool when I first got it. Funny how it looks so awkward now. But the PS3 is even bigger than the launch PS2 isn't it? I wonder How small they'll get the PS3 to be in seven years, haha.
Funny how Sony doesn't let their systems die. It gives me confidence in their lines of products. And I know I can buy a PS3 with confidence, knowing it will last decades, like they say. Even if PS4 comes out, I know I can still enjoy my PS3 for few more years afterwards, especially since we get news like that games looking awesome now are only using 30-50% of the hardware! i can't wait to see what's in the future for us.

As mentioned, I myself don't really see the point. As long as you have a smoothly running PS2, the size isn't too much of a problem. The size of the original wasn't something you'd moan about or complain that it takes up too much space as it doesn't really, unless the room you have it in is tiny.

Ah well, I'll stop my little rant. It's good that they're still improving, but I'd say focus more towards what gamers would really appreciate, not just look at it as
"Meh" and continue with what they were doing.

I still got one of them fat PS2s. I'm glad they're still making games for this system, the PS2 really is/was the best game console in my opinion. It always has/had really good exclusive games, the controller was perfect, and I never had any problems at all when it came to the hardware (and I've had it since launch). I say as long as people keep buying these suckers, Sony should keep making em.

Isn't there a silver one? That looks mad nice. But I'm not getting one anyway. Still a good system with some good games.

well if they want to make something slimer why don't they try making the ps3 slimer and maybe it will come down in price as well making it even less expensive for more people to buy.

IMO i don't believe there is a point in makin something that was already made smaller, even smaller.

Currently not possible. But give it a year or so and they will make a slimmer one.

My old PS2 has been working despite severe dust collection in the fan for nearly 6 years. It's an amazing console. I however am looking forward to a PS3.

I have the original one. I bought it at like $250. I'm not going to get a smaller one. This is just stupid imo.

The physical size will not change. The chipset inside is what is smaller. It will allow for lower manufacturing prices and higher profit on a console which is still selling hundreds of thousands a month.

I already have the slimline one, so I don't think I'll be needing another PS2.

yeah i got a slimline and i don't really have a problem with it.. and if it is the chipset alone that is getting smaller i don't see a use in replacing it..

Actually im assuming the price cut was implemented cause of the newer and cheaper materials they found. They could always lower the price again for Christmas so it will shy rocket in sales.
