No sooner has Sony officially dropped the retail price of its 60GB PlayStation 3 by $100 USD, than we see Microsoft positioning an Xbox 360 drop to undercut the competition... according to analyst Michael Pachter.

In a note to investors today, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter stated that Microsoft will announce an Xbox 360 price cut at the start of tomorrow's E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica.

Pachter claims the price cut will affect all three Xbox 360 models, with the $299 USD Core pack dropping to $249 USD; the $399 USD Premium pack dropping to $349 USD; and the recently released $479 USD 120GB Elite model dropping to $399 USD.

If true, it's likely Microsoft's pricing reduction move is being made in light of Sony's recent $100 USD price cut on the PlayStation 3 in North America.

It'll happen, they are going into their second year, after all. Then again, M$ loves to get every dime from us I see...a $50 drop at best next year.

Bad move MS, you are already losing money as it is, why do this.

Well I guess Microsoft wants to have everyone owning an XBOX 360 instead of a PS3. This price cut will make the XBOX 360 core system extremely affordable for me and I might just have to get it when the price cut happens.

Yeah, it was going to happen. If people seen that Sony had dropped prices of thier consoles and noticed Microsoft hadn't, they'd probably have thought they might as-well get it cheaper than usual. Good move Microsoft.

of course, they had too.. THough, they can't try to be neck and neck with SONY, they're out of the competition! They need to make a 100 dollar price drop if they're serious. THey need to counter not just Sony, but themselves! And what they've done to their own consoles and their own image.
