It has been years with Sony losing money with each console sold. When it first launched, the PS3 was losing on average 300 dollars, and slowely it made its way down to 40 dollars. Now reports are coming in that Sony is now making a profit on each PS3 sold. Way to go!

It's an often cited fact that console publishers sell their consoles at a loss, particularly in the early years. Sony seems to have turned a corner, and the PS3 is bringing in a profit for the first time.

The news, first reported by Japanese gaming news site andriasang, reveals that Sony's PS3 began turning a small profit at the end of March 2010. Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda believes that the profits will increase in the coming months thanks to potential cost cutting measures.

Actually they are not yet profitable on it now. They still lost $80 million on the PS3 last quarter so they are getting closer and closer but it's not there yet.

And we won't know about the recent hardware revisions until early July when the next quarterly data comes in.

Actually if you read the article this is about per console. That loss was of Sony's whole gaming sector, inc PS2 and PSP. The PS3 can be turning a profit whereas the PSP and PS2 are making such losses it counters the profit and results in an overall loss.

It's good if they reach a profit per console, since it's only 3 years into a 10 year cycle it's going to spend the next 7 years churning out a profit that will only increase as the price for development drops. Then in comes PS4 and the whole thing begins again.

Not really they wont wait 7 years to release PS4, They will look outdated by then. What they mean by 10 years is 10 years support like they still support the PS2 now.

Yes by that I meant 7 years of profit and by the time it's discontinued the PS4 will be profitable.

Y'know, all things considered, it didn't take them incredibly long to turn a profit. It all just falls back to howpeople view it as behind because it released one year after everyone else. Good job on 'em finally turning a PS3 profit.
