Best Buy likes PS3's price drop

xsynergyx | July 11, 2007 | News | Playstation 3 XBOX 360
Best Buy thinks that the price drop for Sony's Playstation 3 is a great move and will ignite the sales. They think it'll increase interest in the system not only because of it's games but that if functions as a blu-ray player as well. Best Buy did not comment on the possiblity of the Xbox 360's price drop.
Best Buy has told GamesIndustry.biz that the company thinks the recently-announced price drop will increase interest in the PS3.
"We think the price move is great and will help drive increased interest, particularly in light of the dual functionality as a BluRay player," said Best Buy's Brian Lucas. "It becomes a viable, cost effective option for people interested in next generation DVD."
As for the inability of retailers to keep the Nintendo Wii in stock, he added "The situation should improve over the course of the second half of the year, but it's difficult to predict when supply and demand will level out with any certainty."
Best Buy had no comment upon speculation that Microsoft would announce a similar price drop for its Xbox 360 console.

Who can hate this price drop? Some people just don't understand that $100 is a lot of money. Another thing they don't seem to understand is that Blu-Ray players are expensive, and the PS3 is quite a bargain with that in mind.

I have to agree with you there. $100 was a sixth of the price and with the capabilities beyond that of a normal blu-ray player while just slightly more expensive I would think that even people who don't play games that much should buy the PS3 instead if they are looking for a blu-ray player.

Who wouldn't. You guys have a good point even if you aren't going to play games, it's still a cheaper BD player which is the best HD format.

It will raise sales, but how many? thats the thing, i think they would of been better doing this October/November, with people buying it for Birthdays then as well as Christmas, it will still sell, if they keep it this price for a long period of time, then it should be all good, but we dont know how long Sony are intending to keep this up

How does anyone know that there won't be another price cut around the holiday season, i mean Sony have not seen what the thousands of analysts have been saying about $200 cut is needed... Cut it by $100 if that doesn't work then around the holiday season slash that bad boy again.

Are you kidding me, are you saying that there is no birthdays in July August and September. There at least 100S if not 1000s of birthdays within those 3 months. This is a better move, and like Existenz they could lower it further. I mean by then the cost of the productions could be even cheaper and it could happen.

Anyway, i think it will still be sometime in the future that sales really spike for PS3, firstly Bluray has to gain popularity and secondly, the games being produced have to be of a quality only fully experienced using the PS3's 9 core processor.. right now it is still foghting with a market too premature for its system..

Sales have apparently doubled for PS3's at five major retailers, so the price drop has obviously had some effect

This really doesn't suprise me, it's a move that should have happened sooner. I know if me or my father see a Playstation 3 price drop over here in the UK we will both be interested in purchasing one.
