David Reeves says that Sony needs to play catch-up with Nintendo. Nintendo has been on the leading edge of handheld gaming for quite some time now and if Sony hopes to keep up with them they're going to have to release a new system.

David Reeves, 14-year veteran of Sony and now chief operating officer of Capcom Europe, said that Sony needs to release a true sequel to the PSP quickly if it expects to compete in the handheld market. While rival Nintendo has revealed the 3DS in detail, its software and potential have reinvigorated the handheld market.

Give it increased processing power, a higher resolution screen, and make the firmware easy to hack/manipulate.

    Guaranteed seller right there .

It wouldn't surprise me if Sony make it a 3D handheld but making the 3D optional for developers. I have heard from some developers working on the 3DS that the console is extremely powerful but the graphics leap isn't as high as it could be because each frame is rendered twice. I can see developers maybe adding options in the game itself to turn off 3D so that the game can increase the visuals.
