So after Sony denied a 100$ price cut, they are cutting the price now. However, that will not affect the Nintendo Wii. According to the article, the Wii worths a mere 249.99$, while the PS3 still worths a lot.

It's no particular surprise that after Sony outright denied a $100 PS3 price cut to $499 a couple of days ago, they've now announced a $100 price cut.

Classy, Sony.

How will this price cut, along with the announcement of an 80GB model for $599 US, affect Nintendo Wii?

It won't.

The market has already spoken for the last eight months, and consumers have overwhelming chosen Wii. Nintendo's console is a mere $249, is both easy and fun to play, and has opened up gaming to millions of previous non-gamers.

Sony already offered a $499 PS3 when it first launched, and the public rejected it. The differences between the 20GB model and the 60GB were minimal. So there's no reason why, all of a sudden, the majority of consumers would be swayed by this announcement. It's still twice as much as Nintendo's console, no matter how you cut it.

well the thing is that the big PS3 titles are yet to launch so it is not confirmed whther PS3 will still continue to struggle when that happens.

I was saying all through Nintendo's conference... You have the upper hand after 33 weeks, now say the same in 33 months, i still believe it is a cheap console because the accessories you need to get the most out of the machine are all extras.

Isn't that the same as Xbox, meaning the poorly constructed hardware and the add-ons too.

Cearly. The PS3 may be worth a lot but...it's worth it Like Existenz mentioned, can they say the same in another year or so? With Nintendo's big titles coming out this year, what could they possibly have to offer next year and on?

True, we don't know what else they are going to come up with, but I'm sure they can keep coming out with some good, fun games.

So the last 8 months are being used as a base for what sales will be like in 3 years. Not exactly full proof logic

    Kinda sounds abit fanboyish.

Sony's price drop will have an effect on the market, whether anyone would like to admit it or not. Fact is, one of the things really hurting the PS3 when it launched was the high price, therefore any kind of price drop is going to generate attention. Whether that translates to sales is still to be seen, but it's a bit early to be claiming a victory just yet.

The only question remaining is if the price reduction is enough. Many analysts believed that even a $100 drop would not be enough, considering the fact that it is still $100 more expensive than a 360. The 20 gig model started at $500, and sold worse than the 60 gig model. Now the 80 gig is coming soon, so it will be interesting to see how Sony fares this holiday.

However, I think the Wii will feel the least effects of Sony's decision. Wii is still notably cheaper than the PS3, has a much more mass market appeal, and is operating on a completely different concept than the PS3, pushing control innovation before graphical power. Xbox360 is the system that will feel the biggest impact from the price drop, most likely dropping the system's price before the holidays.

Actually the reason why the 20GB was doing worse was cause everyone liked the 60GB. And with the extra stuff you was getting compared to the 20GB, it was a better deal. Now the 60GB is cheaper and the 80GB is the exact same as the 60 only difference is the emotion chip. So i say most people will get the 60GB. Besides didn't someone say that Sony might lower the price further b4 the big Christmas holiday. And i think the wii and xbox will both suffer by the end of this year to next.

No offence, but with Brawl comming out on December 3 and with Mario Kart Wii comming at the first quarter of the year, I doubt that will happen.

Agreed, Nintendo seem to be swimming in their own blue ocean right now. With a host of big hitters coming our way for the Wii towards the end of this year, it is very doubtful that the ocean will turn into a bloodbath anytime soon.

$100 is allot. The Wii is worth it though, surprised it's only $250.
Im not sure what that will do though..if anyone can even find a PS3.

I agree that 100$ is a lot, specially with the PS3 being a powerful machine. However, according to the article, it is not going to affect the sales. I think it will.
The reason I posted this article is because it called my attention .

Sony is already losing so much money on each PS3 they sell, they bring it down anymore and they'll go bankrupt. So Nintendo coming out with Brawl, Soul Caliber Legends, Metroid Prime, and many more games for the Hardcore fans, plus expanding its collection of games for the "casual" gamer, they look like they are going to give Sony a hard time.
