Bad news for those holding out hope that Final Fantasy XIV would make an appearance on the Xbox 360. Square has canceled the port and the reason has to do with the way Xbox LIVE is setup.

Xbox LIVE's troubles with MMO games continue as Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV will not come the Xbox 360 online service. The reason cited is the "closed environment" that Xbox LIVE operates under in comparison to the PS3 and Windows PC.

I always knew they were gonna port it. Too bad they aren't.

Though their reason doesn't make a lotta sense to me.

Why am I not surprised about Microsoft's handling of FF?

"Oh yeah we'll pay you a ton of money to give us FF13 too!"

"Oh hell no you can't do that with FF14 on our system! We don't like you anymore now! "

...Or at least that's how it comes across to me.

What exactly is it that XBL is so closed about? It's not that different from PSN, and FF14 is on PS3. So what is it that's forcing them to cancel it? As far as I can see, it just seems like MS was being stubborn in some respect and wouldn't budge on the subject, which brought production to a standstill on that platform.

I'm pretty sure SE wants XBL to be able to communicate with PSN, which Microsoft clearly doesn't like the thought of.

I believe it's something to do with Microsoft's policy about third party software distribution/platforms on LIVE. Apparently Sony offers more freedom, which is why Valve is putting out Steam for the PS3, but not for the 360 though they have a long standing relationship with the latter.

Microsoft just want more money to themselves, and they cant fathom the thought of anyone else making money.

Remember those third party memory cards?

Also it's what Existance said, Xbox Live is very closed whereas PSN is more open, I think having steam on PS3 also means Valve can sell their products directly through it rather than go through PSN and that must be a major reason why it won't be on Live.
