According to the Sony Computer Entertainment of America boss, Jack Tretton, sales have doubled in North America. Selling for about $500 USD sales have went way up at five of North America's leading retailers since Monday. Sony hopes to now ship 11 million units by the end of this year. Some publishers still doubt that the price cut will help Sony in the long run.

It may only be days since Sony announced a USD 100 price cut for the PlayStation 3, but according to SCEA boss Jack Tretton sales have doubled in North America, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting.

Now selling for USD 499, sales have shot up at five of North America's leading retailers.

"Since Monday, sales of the 60GB PS3 have doubled at our top five retailers," said Tretton during Sony's E3 conference.

New European PS3 pricing details are expected to be announced tomorrow.

The company said that it now hopes to ship at least 11 million units by the end of this year.

Although boosting sales, some publishers have expressed doubts that the price cut will have a significant effect on sales in the long term, with Square Enix president John Yamamoto telling GamesIndustry.biz, "I think USD 500 for PS3 is still a bit expensive for msot gamers."

yeah.. I was waiting for a price drop, thinking I would buy a PS3 then.. But now that I realize a price drop only makes it $500, I'm still waiting for another price drop. Till then, I just got a Wii. And it's truly next-gen. Sony is nexgen in graphics and power. Wii is next gen in thinking and technology

Still $550 in Canada. I'm not willing to dish out that much money for a console. But I'm still interested to see what happens with this price cut.

True, but that's a $150 drop, for us (Canadians) which is quite a bit of money.

Come on Doubled in sales, I mean i think the ps3 is doing fabulous now with there price cut. Who knows maybe they are waiting for another price cut but at least there is one now.

And 11 Million is sales well i go on a limb and saying it will be 13 million. Only cause the next price cut could be in October.

First of all, they said 11 million shipped, not sold. While its not impossible to sell 11 million PS3s by the end of the year, it could also be a reach. I expect PS3 sales to skyrocket during the fall/holiday season, because of all the games being released. 13 million, however, is definitely a reach. What foundation are you using to come up with this possible price cut in October?

On a side note, lets all drop this "true next-gen" business. Every new console is next-gen because they are new consoles, period. All next-gen means is the new generation for whichever company is in question. The features of a console don't make it next-gen. Thats all just marketing.

Well of course the PS3 sales have sky rocketed. Lots of people were waiting for the PS3 to get a price cut and now that it has gotten a price cut more people are buying the PS3. I definitely think this price cut will help the PS3 in the long run. By the end of the year I wouldn't be surprised if Sony sold over 12 million PS3s.

A price drop normally would involve more people buying the conolse so nothing new really.
