Hurrah says the world as Sony seemingly crumbles under consumer pressure and drops the price of its 60GB PS3 from $599 to $499.
Boom, less than a week later Sony announces that the 60GB model is to be phased out from August, leaving only the 80GB model, which is... you guessed it... $599. Same price for an extra 20GB.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed that the 60GB PlayStation 3 model is currently being phased out in the United States, effectively meaning that any future prospective owners of the machine will be forced into buying the ($599) 80GB hard disk drive-equipped version.
According to SCEE, the 60GB version will not be available after July in North America, with reports that Sony Computer Entertainment America only cut the price to rid themselves of excess 60GB PS3 stock.

The 60 GB model is moving over to the UK then Europe with the new starter pack deal that Sony announced today ^^
Sony, you're awesome.
Nice for Americans though ... Unfortunately
I think most people safe to say were under impression SCEE and SCEA are in sync with each other's moves. So it is not our fault for not expecting it to be wrong..
So its not phasing out as it says. I suspect its a rumor.
Besides SCEE said this, why should we believe them, when its SCEA. Same company different locations.
In other words, Sony won't be producing any more 60 gig PS3 until they run out, and see how they are doing. My guess is, they will be producing it again once they figure out 20 extra gigs of storage doesn't make a $600 attractive to those who haven't already bought a PS3.
Do Sony not realize how happy people were about the price cut? THAT IS WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT, SONY!

EDIT: Um, it's no rumor when the Sony pres. actually says it himself on video.
Just wait and see, both parts are contradicting each other here.
