Hurrah says the world as Sony seemingly crumbles under consumer pressure and drops the price of its 60GB PS3 from $599 to $499.

Boom, less than a week later Sony announces that the 60GB model is to be phased out from August, leaving only the 80GB model, which is... you guessed it... $599. Same price for an extra 20GB.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed that the 60GB PlayStation 3 model is currently being phased out in the United States, effectively meaning that any future prospective owners of the machine will be forced into buying the ($599) 80GB hard disk drive-equipped version.

According to SCEE, the 60GB version will not be available after July in North America, with reports that Sony Computer Entertainment America only cut the price to rid themselves of excess 60GB PS3 stock.

Doesn't this basically cancel out the price cut?

    black_wing79 Jul 13, 07
yes it does... and whats more the backward compatibilty on the 80Bg sucks since there is no emotion chip..so looks like Sony just stabbed themselves in the foot after what seemed to be good news..

This really makes me furious. I was actually considering making the investment following the price cut, but this... no, Sony can whistle for my cash!

Kinda funny how easy people are to bash Sony i mean it wasn't even confirmed true and people were all "i'm furious"... "this is crap!" haha so funny.

Well, that's better news, but you have to admit that it raises questions about future plans for the 60GB model. I will watch intently with one hand firmly clasped to my purse strings.

well i was under the impression that the news was true since
    quote
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed that the 60GB PlayStation 3 model is currently being phased out in the United States,
so how is a reader supposed to think up a conspiracy theory when they read that?

I think most people safe to say were under impression SCEE and SCEA are in sync with each other's moves. So it is not our fault for not expecting it to be wrong..

hmm, I'm not convinced. The "foreseeable future" means they can change their minds at any point still

Official Sony blog also says its not being phased out.

    Insanity Prevails Jul 13, 07
So, it's a case of Sony of America saying one thing and Sony of Europe completely contradicting them? I think they really need to sort out what is what because now they've managed to raise serious doubt in the minds of the gamers.

ARe you guys crazy read the source it says this

    quote
Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has now officially denied what it calls "inaccurate" reports.

A spokesperson for Sony in the US told Next-Gen: "As announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August at $599 and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We have will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of our consumers for the foreseeable future."

To clarify, the report initially published by CVG is seemingly not true.

So its not phasing out as it says. I suspect its a rumor.
Besides SCEE said this, why should we believe them, when its SCEA. Same company different locations.

Well, like the article said, it is inaccurate. If you read it correctly he said they would run out of the current stock by the end of the July and the site just immediately assumed that they wouldn't be restocking on 60GBs.

But it says that statement is wrong just like the link Black wing posted. SO there not getting Phased out.

According to Karraker, "The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our hardware offerings in the North America at this time."

I'm glad to here that this article is false. It would be really lame if Sony got rid of the 60GB PS3 and only had the 80GB PS3 left.

This new article has Senior Public Relations Manager for Sony Computer Entertainment America, Patrick Seybold saying the following:

    quote Patrick Seybold
The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted," Seybold said. "We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated.
In other words, Sony won't be producing any more 60 gig PS3 until they run out, and see how they are doing. My guess is, they will be producing it again once they figure out 20 extra gigs of storage doesn't make a $600 attractive to those who haven't already bought a PS3.

Um let me go on a limb and say this is true, than that would mean The 80GB would be getting a price cut of 200 than.

This sucks ... plain and simple.

Do Sony not realize how happy people were about the price cut? THAT IS WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT, SONY!

      Storm* Jul 14, 07
Exactly. Are they really this stupid? Sony should think about this. Their sales have been going up for a reason, $100 is a big deal...and taking that off the PS3 made all the difference.

    Synthesis Jul 14, 07
Come on Sony don't do this to me. I was planning on getting the PS3 and now they announce this. This isn't cool.

I think this VGTV clip of Kaz Hirai confirming the end of the 60GB PS3 pretty much ends the debate on the matter... and once again clearly shows that when Sony says "No" it actually means "Yes".

Sony has also added more to what he said after that video was made. Such as the quotes bb and I put.

EDIT: Um, it's no rumor when the Sony pres. actually says it himself on video.

Those two links find rumors and supports them. They are wrong. I need to find that link from the SCEA blogs. Besides is SCEE and SCEA the same in terms of saying whats going down in there part.
        • -1
          Raziel_326 Jul 14, 07
Kaz Hirai straight up says it on a video interview and you still call it a rumor? Wow, I can see why you were perma-banned from the PS3 forum. Your ignorance is just incredible. I love it how you rated everybody down for finding evidence supporting the claim.

    mistermostyn Jul 14, 07
Finalblade, how is a statement from Kaz Hirai "a rumor"? It's video, his lips are moving, sound comes out. It's not a clever editing trick designed to upset Sony fanboys... which you clearly are.

      Final Blade Jul 15, 07
Um cause we heard this b4. And seriously, both are saying 2 different things. Im being optimistic. Im not a fanboy, Though if i was i would be bashing other systems.

Just wait and see, both parts are contradicting each other here.

    tidus04 Jul 14, 07
Why do they want to do this I dont know, it is only an extra 20gb and to be honest that is not much. Shame to hear they are doing this to you folks.
  • 0
    Raziel_326 Jul 14, 07
I cannot say this for a total fact, but I am pretty sure this is 20GB vs. 60GB all over again. They're going to see which console sales faster and saves them the most money. They expect 80GB to beat the 60GBs like how 60GB beat the 20GBs. If the 80GBs don't sell enough, my guess would be they would stick with the price cut.

    Bale Fire* Jul 14, 07
I read something similar, they are testing out how this will effect sales and change their strategy accordingly

Interesting. So this is a ploy to see how this will affect the people.

    black_wing79 Jul 15, 07
yeah and if they do come up with a 120 GB liked it is rumoured i have a feeling we will be having this whole debate all over again...
