Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves says that the Playstation 3 will be the winner in the game console war by March 2008. He also says that the Xbox 360 will not take over the holiday season. He doesn't think that just having games for the 360 is enough. When asked whether that the cost is still high, he replied that it is, but people are still paying for it and now, they'll get two games and an extra controller.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves has told GamesIndustry.biz that PlayStation 3 will be the clear leader in the next-gen console market within the next nine months.
"PlayStation 3, you will see, will be far and away the winner when you look at it by March '08. They really, really will," he predicted.
"It's something that is going to be a slow burner, and suddenly it's like a tsunami; it will just overtake you."
Reeves said he does not agree that Xbox 360 will dominate during the competitive Christmas season, despite recent comments to the contrary from Microsoft's Peter Moore.
"I know it's nice to focus on one year, but he said the same last year - 'We're going to win the holiday season.' But they didn't; they missed that opportunity," stated Reeves.
"I honestly don't think that just having the games on Xbox 360 is enough."
His comments came following the announcement that SCEE is introducing a new PS3 bundle which will retail for the same price as the standalone console did previously.
When asked if he thought GBP 425 / GBP 599 was still a high price to ask consumers to pay Reeves replied, "It is, but surprisingly, people are paying that amount of money for it. Now they'll get two games and an extra controller as well."

But seriously I reckon the PS3 will really start to take off this these next few months
I new this since the start.
360 has their massive holiday lineup, as well as several big titles coming out next year, like Too Human, Fable 2 (I think, correct me if I'm wrong.) Banjo Kazooie 3, and others. Sony has MGS4 and FF coming out next year, and a good holiday line up as well. Finally, Wii has the big three coming out by the end of the year, along with some great looking 3rd party titles coming out next year. FFCCCB, No More Heros, Disasters, along with Mario Kart and Wii fit should keep Wii's flying off the shelf into next year easily.
What? It's primarily a games machine. Clearly NOT having the games on PlayStation 3 ISN'T working for Sony, Dave. Clear winner in nine months? I think not.
Not unless they hack $200 off that 80GB model... and how quickly do Sony think we'll forget the current 'price cut that's not really a price cut' debacle?
Theres no doubts it will reach the top eventually, as the PS3 was designed to be in service for a much longer time that the other 2 consoles, but I think its a little far - fetch.
However, it will definitely beat the 360 soon, as that's gone severely down hill over the past few months ...
I don't think declaring victory is for anyone to do just yet.
Sony is putting their bets on the "big name" games coming out soon, but they shouldn't start bragging just yet ... maybe they should wait until the sales of these games actually begin, before counting their winnings.
Just because the PS3 has a pretty nice bundle with two games and two controllers doesn't mean crap. It's still $600, whereas the Xbox 360 costs what, $450? Even if you DO have to pay for Xbox LIVE, it still APPEARS cheaper. Most people, unless they're fanboys, don't take extra fees into consideration.
but by March, I dont think it will be. I think it is getting started but will be more around June.
And Existentz, what good is having a console with a low percentage of faulty units if you hardly have any reason to use it?
SWIDT? Don't be ridiculous.
Cdemon i believe the director said MGS4 will be released b4 the end of this year. As stated in new trailer
Also, how many of those PS2 games will be BC on the 80GB model now that the PS2 emotion chip is being abandoned/replaced, which Sony has already said will reduce the amount of PS2 titles the next-gen unit can play?
There's no way in hell that Sony can claw back the Wii/Xbox 360 differential AND be deemed a "clear winner" by March 2008. It's typical corporate chest beating for projected 'things to come' when the proclaimed software that is supposed to pull Sony out its slump hasn't even arrived yet.
Don't get me wrong, I want all three parties to do well and take us to the next level, but I wish Sony would come down off its PS2-created pedestal. The market has changed, they're no longer the leading force, and playing catch up might see them better appreciating their audience.
