E3: PS3 will be 'the winner' by March '08 - Reeves

xsynergyx | July 14, 2007 | News | Playstation 3 E3 2007 Company
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves says that the Playstation 3 will be the winner in the game console war by March 2008. He also says that the Xbox 360 will not take over the holiday season. He doesn't think that just having games for the 360 is enough. When asked whether that the cost is still high, he replied that it is, but people are still paying for it and now, they'll get two games and an extra controller.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves has told GamesIndustry.biz that PlayStation 3 will be the clear leader in the next-gen console market within the next nine months.
"PlayStation 3, you will see, will be far and away the winner when you look at it by March '08. They really, really will," he predicted.
"It's something that is going to be a slow burner, and suddenly it's like a tsunami; it will just overtake you."
Reeves said he does not agree that Xbox 360 will dominate during the competitive Christmas season, despite recent comments to the contrary from Microsoft's Peter Moore.
"I know it's nice to focus on one year, but he said the same last year - 'We're going to win the holiday season.' But they didn't; they missed that opportunity," stated Reeves.
"I honestly don't think that just having the games on Xbox 360 is enough."
His comments came following the announcement that SCEE is introducing a new PS3 bundle which will retail for the same price as the standalone console did previously.
When asked if he thought GBP 425 / GBP 599 was still a high price to ask consumers to pay Reeves replied, "It is, but surprisingly, people are paying that amount of money for it. Now they'll get two games and an extra controller as well."

This would be a lot more memorable if Mr. Reeves would actually give a reason for his proposal, because I really don't see it. I guess PS3 is doing better in Europe than the other territories, so that may be what he is saying. I also like how he is basically saying how Sony of America is screwing everyone over.

He is just going by the the PS3 is selling better than the PS1 and PS2 combined at the same point... And going by that they should be at about 15 million units sold mark my March which is still yet 8 months away which is very possible, going by how many people i have heard say "I am waiting for such and such a game" or "It isn't worth it right now but in a few months i will buy one" The fact is only 11 million of the 124 million+ Sony PS2 owners have an Xbox 360 there are millions still out there waiting to upgrade to the successor.

I am not too sure about this. Sure, the PS3 is going to do much better than it did before with the upcoming big hitters and the price cut, but overtake the rest of the competition? Doubtful, but we'll see.

Well Sony will probably be winning the console war between the 360 by March 2008 but it's still got a ways to go to catch up with Nintendo. Honestly it's still to early to say who is gonna win the console war. Sony thinks they'll win it, Microsoft thinks they'll win it and Nintendo thinks they'll win it? Surprise? No. Let's just wait and see.

Yes, we need to wait and see. All three consoles have some amazing things lined up that will sell a lot of consoles.
360 has their massive holiday lineup, as well as several big titles coming out next year, like Too Human, Fable 2 (I think, correct me if I'm wrong.) Banjo Kazooie 3, and others. Sony has MGS4 and FF coming out next year, and a good holiday line up as well. Finally, Wii has the big three coming out by the end of the year, along with some great looking 3rd party titles coming out next year. FFCCCB, No More Heros, Disasters, along with Mario Kart and Wii fit should keep Wii's flying off the shelf into next year easily.

Before I clicked the headline, I was hoping this Reeves character was not a Sony exec, just so everything quote wouldn't be biased. So much for that. In all honesty, starting next month, the PS3 has a huge chance to do some damage in the console wars, but this is like saying "my jeans are better than yours because I'm wearing them."

"I honestly don't think that just having the games on Xbox 360 is enough."

What? It's primarily a games machine. Clearly NOT having the games on PlayStation 3 ISN'T working for Sony, Dave. Clear winner in nine months? I think not.

Not unless they hack $200 off that 80GB model... and how quickly do Sony think we'll forget the current 'price cut that's not really a price cut' debacle?

What are games if your console is so poorly made it probably won't be working by the time alot of them come out?

Good point Existenz, MS has already stated that all of there 11.6 million consoles worldwide is flawed. So like she said what are games if you can't play them on a flawed system, stated my MS.

The PS3 is going to become increasingly more popular throughout the rest of this year, due to the games coming out, I doubt it will be able to catch up to the Wii in that amount of time.
Theres no doubts it will reach the top eventually, as the PS3 was designed to be in service for a much longer time that the other 2 consoles, but I think its a little far - fetch.
However, it will definitely beat the 360 soon, as that's gone severely down hill over the past few months ...

It seems that all three companies are getting ahead of themselves and already declaring victory well ahead. It's nice to see such confidence in their products, but it could also be seen as somewhat arrogant.

I don't think declaring victory is for anyone to do just yet.

I really can't see this happening by March '08. The Wii's already pretty far ahead, and it'll take a hell of a while to catch up.

Sony is putting their bets on the "big name" games coming out soon, but they shouldn't start bragging just yet ... maybe they should wait until the sales of these games actually begin, before counting their winnings.

I don't even think they should be counting on "big name" games to cause people to go out and buy their system though. A lot of people around where I live already have become hooked on the Xbox lines because the system is cheaper and has plenty of good games.

Just because the PS3 has a pretty nice bundle with two games and two controllers doesn't mean crap. It's still $600, whereas the Xbox 360 costs what, $450? Even if you DO have to pay for Xbox LIVE, it still APPEARS cheaper. Most people, unless they're fanboys, don't take extra fees into consideration.

It is only a matter of time before the Ps3 really gets going and when it dose nothing will be able to stop it.

but by March, I dont think it will be. I think it is getting started but will be more around June.

Isn't MGS4 coming out in March next year? Sony doesn't have a choice but to rely on their big hits like Final Fantasy, Tekken, and Metal Gear Solid, though. For sure, this estimated time period isn't likely...may take another year, if that.

I think March 2008 is a little early. He might want to shoot for August at bare minimum maybe. I don't know when all their big hits are coming out, though.

I can definitely see them getting over 25 million by march 08, giving by another price cut and mad games. However them winning the console war at that time requires another price cut and more games, which will happen b4 that date.

    MGS4 is '08, finalblade.

And Existentz, what good is having a console with a low percentage of faulty units if you hardly have any reason to use it?

    SWIDT? Don't be ridiculous.

I can't see Sony taking the lead. People talk about big hit titles for it but not big hit titles for other systems. Also if people say "it sold faster then the ps2 at this point in it's life" remeber Nintendo is kicking the ps2's ass during this point in it's life. Only time will tell but I doubt Ps3 taking lead in March 08.

This time the ps2 really has no purpose, reason being ps3 can play those games. Saying that holds no bounds what so ever.

Cdemon i believe the director said MGS4 will be released b4 the end of this year. As stated in new trailer

    mistermostyn | July 16, 2007
No, FinalBlade... MGS4 is slated for "Spring 2008" as clearly stated at E3.

Also, how many of those PS2 games will be BC on the 80GB model now that the PS2 emotion chip is being abandoned/replaced, which Sony has already said will reduce the amount of PS2 titles the next-gen unit can play?

There's no way in hell that Sony can claw back the Wii/Xbox 360 differential AND be deemed a "clear winner" by March 2008. It's typical corporate chest beating for projected 'things to come' when the proclaimed software that is supposed to pull Sony out its slump hasn't even arrived yet.

Don't get me wrong, I want all three parties to do well and take us to the next level, but I wish Sony would come down off its PS2-created pedestal. The market has changed, they're no longer the leading force, and playing catch up might see them better appreciating their audience.

True, I can't see them being the "clear winner" as you said, by March and it will be hard to catch up to their competitors, but I truly think they might be able to do it.

I can see the PS3 moving up the charts over the coming month, and rolling into next year, with the prices lowering, the better games coming out soon as well as early next year, why wouldnt it sell big? Its peak will be November-Mid january if you ask me, with Christmas a big plus and MGS4 and Resident Evil 5 early next year
