Mario Party 8 Recalled!

Sakura | July 16, 2007 | News | Wii
The recently released Mario Party 8 has been recalled in the United Kingdom. A small percentage of the games contained a disk error which caused the game to display an offensive word. There will be a new release date shortly.
Nintendo has recalled all copies of Mario Party 8 in the UK due to it containing an offensive word.

The title was released for the Nintendo Wii on Friday and has seen heavy promotion over the weekend with TV advertisements.
"Unfortunately we have discovered that a small number of games contain the wrong version of the disk due to an assembly error," reads a statement from the company.

"We have therefore decided to recall all copies of the game from UK retailers so that this mistake can be corrected."
Last month, Ubisoft was forced to pull all copies of DS game Mind Quiz in Europe after it was found to contain offensive comments.

Nintendo said it will announce a new release date for Mario Party 8 shortly.

The offensive word was "Spastic", and the game has since been re-released in some shops in the UK.

How is it possibly for a assemble error to create a offensive word ? And why not all the games have it?

I assume it means that the version that normally would have been given to the UK had that word removed, but some other version with the word still in it got released by mistake.

    But spastic?

Anyone here from the UK? Maybe they may know more about that word. Don't see how it can be offensive, either. Someone must have done this as a joke, an inside man you could say. It's still lame, because all you get is a lot of angry customers.

Spastic over here in the UK is actually used as a kind of slur. If you don't like someone one term that can be used as an insult is to call them a "Spastic" so I can see why it was removed from the game.

The word "spastic" was found in the Mind Quiz game for DS, not in Mario Party 8.

Yeah, it was in Mind Quiz. Some lady was playing it, I believe in a hospital, and got a bad score so they gave her a spastic ranking. She was pissed because either her Grandfather or Son was "Mentally Handicapped."

A message to the current UK game killing spree: Quit your Bitchin.

    WIKIKI:
"Mario Party 8 was reportedly withdrawn from game shelves because the game includes the word "spastic", which is considered an offensive word in the United Kingdom.

The word was in the American version of the game, however, the word is generally considered as innocuous in America. The word is also in other European versions, because most of Europe does not consider the word offensive."

UK needs to lighten up. Damn pansies.

Yeah, something about a mother's kid having epilepsy and her being pissed off about the word came up too...

If I was a kid, and saw the word "spastic" in a Mario Party game, I would have thought nothing of it.

It's parents who feel the need to bitch about these "offensive" words, when the kids probably don't even give a damn.

Glad I don't live in the UK. That sucks though, to have them all recalled. What was the "offensive material" anyways? Is it really that bad?

You should read the comments they've mentioned it many times, and as I said above as well, Spastic IS considered a form of insult in the UK, and it actually makes sense to me as to why they removed the game.

    Hilarious.

And yet, they say something intentionally "worse" in Shrek, rated PG. -_-
