Is Sony price gouging with the PS3?

xsynergyx | July 16, 2007 | News | Playstation 3 Company
Australians and people that live in the UK are charged up to $400 more than the US has to pay for the PS3 console. Many consumers are claiming that Sony is purposely "Price gouging" in an attempt to make up for lost proftis. Sony told Austalia that they'll get a starter pack with an extra controller and games. This pack costs less than $25 for Sony, but they're charging $125. In the UK, Sony ruled out the price cut for the PS3 just a few days after North America got a price cut. Instead, they offer the start pack with two free games and two controllers. This means that the PS3 will cost constumers about $420 more in the UK than the other side of the world.
Three days after the Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment in Australia Michael Ephraim said that Sony would be matching the 17% price cut afford the PS 3 in the USA, no cuts have been announced. Nor has Sony Australia announced a new 80GB PS3.
In Australia and the UK, Sony consumers are charged up to $400 more than US nationals for the PS3 games console. With many consumers claiming that SCE in Australia is deliberately "Price gouging" in an effort to make up for lost profits.

SHN has been told that Australian consumers could well get a starter pack with an extra controller and games similar to the UK market. This pack is valued at around $125.00. However, to Sony the cost of the pack will be less than $25, which is a lot less than giving away hard cash.

In the UK, Sony is facing a backlash in the UK after ruling out a price cut for the PlayStation 3 games console just days on from a US$100 ($112) reduction in the US. Customers across Europe will instead be offered a ‘starter pack' which includes two free games and two controllers.

The move means the PS3 will cost shoppers almost $420 more in the UK than on the other side of the Atlantic.

Sony has been coming under intense pressure in the US to close the sales gap on Microsoft and the top-selling Nintendo Wii. It has sold 1.4 million PS3s in the US since its launch last November, compared with 2.8 million for the Wii.

The Japanese group also announced plans on Monday to launch a new 80GB version of the console in America. A spokesman for Sony UK insisted the group was not short-changing customers.

"The starter pack means customers are getting £115 of added value for the same price," he said. "How can that possibly be ripping people off?" The free games on offer alonmgside two Sixaxis controllers are Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, Genji: Days of the Blade, Formula One Championship Edition and Ridge Racer 7.

The PS3 was launched in the UK and Europe in March, after a series of delays caused by technical problems and a stock shortage.

It is £125 more expensive than the equivalent Microsoft Xbox 360 bundle of console and games and £225 more expensive than the Nintendo Wii with two games.

I don't think they understand the greatness of this pack. Its a 200 dollar add ons for 25 dollars more. Its a bargain. Besides you need games to play when you get the system.

The pack isn't too bad, but I think most people would prefer the price drop.

At the moment, I do hate Sony, not cause I'm some other console fanboy, but because they think that just cause they throw in a few add-ons that makes everything fair and peachy. Give me a price drop, screw the add-ons, what, do they think people can simply chuck out $900?

But you will need games for the system when you buy it right. Or would you rather spend an extra $100+ for a game and controller.

Add ons just make it seem more sweet in some way, I dont really know how to say it but they try and make it all better because of that. Yes the price drop would make it aLL better.

Well, I dunno about Australia, but there are high import taxes/tariffs in the UK...

Canada doesn't do to bad compared to the UK or Australia, it seems...Well, if a country's dollar is worth more, things sell for a higher price...
