Moore & Bell: We want Final Fantasy on the Xbox 360

xsynergyx | July 16, 2007 | News | XBOX 360 Company
In two different chats, Spencer, from Siliconera, asked Jeff Bell, Corporate Vice President of Global Marketing, and Peter Moore the head of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment if they could have just one third party that's Japanese on their Xbox 360, what would they choose. Bell quickly responded and said Final Fantasy. Moore said Mario and then after being told it's Nintendo's and probably not going to happen, he then switched to Final Fantasy. Moore said he'd go to Japan to make Final Fantasy an exclusive on the 360 and there has been talk of bringing Square Enix's RPG's to the 360. Bell says the 360 is not doing good in Japan, even though there's a few RPG's on the console, but if Final Fantasy got on it, that would be a nice start.
In two separate chats I asked Jeff Bell, Corporate Vice President of Global Marketing, and Peter Moore the head of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment division if they could have one third party Japanese franchise on the Xbox 360 which would they pick. Mr. Bell immediately responded with Final Fantasy. Mr. Moore let out an optimistic roar for Mario and I mentioned that since it’s Nintendo's that is probably not going to happen. After Mario, Mr. Moore picked Final Fantasy. Mr. Moore said he would “go all the way to Japan” to make Final Fantasy an exclusive on the Xbox 360 and he mentioned that there have been talks about bringing Square-Enix’s RPG series to the Xbox 360.

Mr. Bell seems more enthusiastic about seeing Final Fantasy on the Xbox 360. “I think now it’s very clear we are here to stay and that we are going to sell an awful lot of consoles globally. I don’t think we have to be quite as persuasive as we needed to in the past. You can see that with our line up that we have available now. We have a lot of third party exclusives and we are very proud of that. How far [would we go to bring Final Fantasy to the Xbox 360]? I think what we would like to do is convince anyone they are going to make more money by partnering with us than they will by spending the money developing and partnering with the entire industry.” If part of Final Fantasy XIII came on the Xbox 360 Mr. Bell said, “that would be a start”.

In a candid chat Mr. Bell acknowledges that the Xbox 360 isn’t selling well in Japan, even though there are RPGs on the console. “We are not happy with our situation in Japan. We’ve got a great team though. Sensui-san is doing a great job at making things better. We launched Blue Dragon and our sales have doubled. Now granted that’s a thousand a week, so that’s not enough. We are at least we are making progress. We hope that we double again when we do Lost Odyssey. We are very happy about Trusty Bell or Eternal Sonata coming to the platform. What we got to do is win over the confidence of the third party publishers that they can bring the great titles that are Japanese inspired and continue to grow the install base and have a console for everyone.”

Besides Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey the Xbox 360 has other RPGs coming out this year including Bioware’s Mass Effect.

I asked Mr. Moore if he felt that Lost Odyssey is a competitor to Final Fantasy XIII. “I think Sakaguchi-san certainly has a competitive spirit in his mind. I think he would like to see it do very well and compete with Final Fantasy. But we needed Lost Odyssey to be Lost Odyssey. I think they (the Playstation crowd) are going to look at Lost Odyssey as is in the spirit of Final Fantasy.”

On other Xbox 360 RPGs I asked Mr. Moore about the status of Blue Dragon 2 and he said, “It’s a rumor”. On Infinite Undiscovery Mr. Moore said, “I haven’t seen the game recently, but think it’s going well. I haven’t been to Japan in awhile. I’ll be in Japan in September and I’ll probably have a look at it then. ” Will we get to see it September? “I’ll know more I get there.”

See? Even Microsoft want a bit of Mario.

Aha, but seriously, shows that MS understand the appeal of such series. Would be interesting to see actions if they actually decide to try for the FF series.

I don't think Square Enix will go for Microsoft, they aren't known to be RPG consoles much, and most the people that do have 360's are not into RPG's, but it could attract more people if they do get Square Enix on their side.

I doubt they would get it but you never know, if they did it would be big as I am sure this may even help them sell a few more consoles in Japan =/

Oh my....I don't know if 360 is right for RPG's, they are more into shooters, so I doubt there'd be many sales there. It is Final Fantasy, though, maybe people will give it a shot. If they get FF, Sony's in big, and I mean BIG trouble.

I could definitely see this happening. Squeenix were even thinking about putting FFXIIII on both PS3 and 360, so there's no reason to think the series won't EVER come to 360. (especially since FFXI was also on XBox)

Me being a player of FFXI since the PS2/PC beta, there was a specific reason they gave it to 360. Most people would say it is because of 360's great online service, which is a true factor, but it's not the main reason they gave 360 FFXI. the main reason is because Sony replaced the original PS2s with the flat PS2s, completely ruling out space for the HDD drive (which is required to play FFXI on PS2). I guess Sony forgot about FFXI, and it totally pissed off Square, so they decided the only way to continue their FFXI sales smoothly, was to make a 360 version and continue PS2 version when PS3 came out (because PS3 has it's own HDD).

Square will eventually develop something for 360. The number of 360 owners is just too large to not develop a game for.

That said, I think Square will keep most of its big material, such as Dragon Quest and the number Final Fantasies on Japanese consoles, those by Sony and Nintendo, because they have a much larger presence in Japan.

What they want is NOT what they will get.

As for Square eventually developing for them, you do realise they already have games in creation for the XBOX360 right? Besides their home country is Japan, where the XBOX360 is doing appallingly. They wouldn't want that to be the cause of less FF sales

As someone who is not a fanboy and never played Final Fantasy, i still think Final Fantasy XIII could work well with the Xbox 360, and it would be really essential for them because their selling for now arent that good.

I highly doubt the 360 will get a Final Fantasy series.

It wouldn't be the first FF on the 360. Let's not forget FF12.

Plus we all know M$ is becoming pretty notorious in bribing people to add exclusivity to their console.

LOL priceless "make Final Fantasy an exclusive on the 360". Im sorry what part of NO FF plans on the Xbox didn't they get in there thick ass heads. But keep dreaming MS. After all it did you so well with your pitiful Xbox hardware, problems.
