Square Enix have recently announced that in their upcoming MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, players are only allowed one hour of XP per day.

Any time over that will reduce the amount of XP gained until you hit 0. If you break the 4 hour mark, it takes a full two days to be able to earn XP again.

Tell us about the “fatigue” and “dormancy” systems please.

We wanted to introduce a system to reward players who don’t have a lot of time to play. Maybe it looks as though we are placing long playing users at a disadvantage, but the idea is really to let play for short periods be viable.

Won’t that cause some concern amongst players who play for longer?

We want these players to try different classes. If you change class the fatigue doesn’t affect you, so you could try non-combat classes as well. You actually have more play choices now as you can make more characters.

that's the problem I've found with MMOs; they require a lot of level grinding to get anywhere. You shouldn't have to dedicate half your evening just to properly enjoy the full scope of the game.

You could say the same about JRPGs, yet look how popular they are now. Just shows that though you or I can't stand it, there are people out there who enjoy grinding.

There's a difference between rewarding time management and just cutting off the game altogether.

If SE really wants to have a monthly fee then they really need to rethink the strategy.

In the end it's just more weeaboo shit. Not like this game will be worth playing anyway.

It's an attempt to force people to subscribe for longer. I don't really believe the whole "We're saving lives" angle. 8 hours a week on a single class isn't that much.

It may backfire as people get sick of it.

This is going to be fun for people who buy the game months after it comes out, when most of everyone will be rocking the endgame and you have to catch up at the rate of 1 hour a day.

I can understande maybe boosting the XP amount for those who only play ocasionally, but limiting others just seems like a real jerk move.

I agree, this seems to aimed at increasing subscriptions.

You shouldn't punish your customers who are dedicated to your product.
I almost feel like they should have two different games or servers, one for the casual users and the other for the more dedicated.
