AMD is getting rid of the ATI graphics brand because they want to simplify branding. John Volkmann states the reasons why. Part of it was concluded through market research.

AMD have announced that they will be getting rid of the ATi graphics brand in a move to simplify their branding strategies.

John Volkmann, vice president of global corporate marketing at AMD, has named several reasons why the brand will be removed. From their research, the company found that “the Radeon brand and the ATI brand are equally strong with respect to conveying our graphics processor offering.”

Volkmann went on to note that the “combination of AMD and Radeon actually proved to be a stronger combination than ATI and Radeon in the minds of processor-aware consumers, by a statistically significant amount.”

Nividia just kind of run circles around ATI at this point...you really have to go out of your way to find decent PhysX support from an ATI card.
