The Playstation 3 is outselling the Xbox 360 in the week ending 7/14 by a difference of 5,921. The PS3 sold 41,005 which is a 131% increase while the 360 sold 35,084 a 1% increase over last week.

The top sellers for the PS3 included Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and Tom Clancy Rainbow Six: Vegas.

As always a number of interesting trends are present in this week's data. The most important of which is the trend of PS3 sales at $499 (before a new $599 sku is introduced in August). It appears that Sony's E3 comments are in fact correct - sales do appear to have doubled - at least short term. Nonetheless, sales were still just above Xbox 360 and just under PS2.

Nice I'm attempting to get it while I still can at this price. Then again, if that analyst was right about them dropping the 80GB one soon enough, I don't know what to do...decisions decisons.

I expected this to happen Microsoft always falls to the bottom with this type of stuff.

The real competition is the Ninted Wii and the PS3. Although the Wii is currently winning.

Heh, it's probably going to be like this on and off. Once a new version comes out (80 GB) There might be more sales...

Good news for Sony. Keep up the good work. They both increased but PS3 a way bigger one.

Hah, a lot bigger increase than the Xbox 360. Congratulations Sony, you're starting to get your PS3 rolling.

wth...Red_Pheonix...how can you even say the real copetition is between the Wii and the PS3...even with the $100 price drop the Ps3 is 2 times as much as a Wii

The Wii sells more because it is cheaper and appeals to the family and young ones

But to get on the topic of this report...is this the first time the PS3 has ever outsold the 360? If so then damn, good job Sony...now if only they keep this up

Stop being an Ignorant fanboy reenee. The fact is XBox is falling. And ps3 is climbing, even if this version will get phased out its good for Sony in the end.

Great! I know the reason of this success is because of the 60GB being discontinued but I have a good feeling that the PS3 will eventually outsell both the Wii and the 360 in due time. Just like it's predecessor.

Hmm, I'm not sure if it'll outsell the Wii, but probably the Xbox 360. The Wii is still growing strong and doesn't look like it's stopping.

It's always a possibility. The PS3 outselling both systems may not happen right away but in the future. But we won't know for sure.

Oh there is a huge chance for it to outsell the Wii... People forget there are 124 million PS2 owners out there ready to upgrade, some maybe upgrading now others will do so next year but Sony still own the market over 2 platforms.

and now what happens when Sony jacks the price back up with the 80 or 120 Gig?
    Drop in sales again?

The Wii strikes me as more of a fad then a long lasting console though. It's got all the components of flash selling items. It's cool, innovative, fun, cheap, and is producing some great things. But it can only be so long before all that has got to get boring. I played a Wii a few times and thoroughly enjoyed it, very much in fact. But every time I play one I like them a little less each time, and some games which I like on other systems are just a plain pain in the ass to play on the Wii, ESPECIALLY shooter games. At least to me.

I think in the long run that the other two consoles are at least going to be a little stronger in sales. I doubt the PS3 will be the thing to beat for the first few years of the war or so, but in the long run it's definitely going to be a worth competitor.

Haha, unsurprisingly, the best PS3 games are also the best sellers, though Virtua Fighter 5 is great too. Oh well, PS3 wins Xbox 360 and still loses to Wii = Possibilities to price drops?

This is very nice to hear but then the 360 has been out longer and is dropping in sales, only natural right. Though it is great to hear Sony is up there

Oh, it outsold the X360 by an amazing 5,000 units. Big deal, seeing as it's the usual mediocrity season when there's hardly any games out.

LOL @ 5,000 units being "on the rise..." At that rate, they'll catch up to the X360 in about fifty years.

    How about 50 weeks?

Seriously Cdemon if you don't think Sony are going to gain some serious ground over the next few months your a fool

    bbb7002004 Jul 19, 07
Wait, why does that make him a fool? PS3 is seeing better sales now thanks to the price drop, but with the pricing going back up to $600 once the 60 gig model runs out, who's to say PS3 will be able to keep their momentum into an incredibly competitive holiday season?

Saying PS3 will catch up to 360 by the end of the year is just as unfounded as saying it will never catch up with the 360. At this point, it is just impossible to tell. Don't call someone a fool just for posting their opinion on an issue that has no clear cut answer at this point.

Actually how do you know they wont drop the price of the 80GB when the 60 is phased out to $499. Seriously, don't judge this situation to back up your opinion. This could be what there doing. But we won't know until the 60 is gone.

If this is a 131% increase for Sony and only a 1% increase for Microsoft, that means that the 360 sold 34736 consoles the week before and the PS3 sold only 17751. Hmmmm.

"Seriously Cdemon if you don't think Sony are going to gain some serious ground over the next few months your a fool."

Why exactly? What's the big difference in the PS3's near future that'll make it constantly outsell the X360?

It may make up some ground, but I doubt it. Usually, the cheaper the console and the better the game lineup determines who sells the most during the holiday seasons. On top of the killer lineup this season for the X360, there's also a pricedrop which could bring the Elite down to $400.

The PS3 was always eventually going to out sell the 360 in the major regions of the world, but I didn't expect it to be outselling the 360 in North America - due to the fact that the PS3 has hardly been out the same amount of time as the 360.
Thats some nice catching up you've done Sony !

    Capn Droid Jul 19, 07
Is this at all a surprise? PS3 already had better graphics and games than the 360 [not to mention Bluray, which I don't see what the hype's about] and then minus 100 big ones off the pricing tag? How does 360 beat that?

I know! Let's stick Vista in with the bundle!

They only initiated a price drop to remove the million or so 60gb models they had on store shelves. Supply and demand, huh?

Once those are gone, the 80gb version, which will be the only SKU on the market for Sony, will still be $600.

$400 for X360 "Falcon" Elite ftw.

      Final Blade Jul 20, 07
Oh really like i said and someone else said that 80Gb could be dropped to 100 after the 60 is phased out. Then what would happen oh thats right, more sales with more Hard-drive. The bundle maybe $600 but what about the console alone, yup my point exactly.

    Bale Fire Jul 20, 07
Just to reply to Cdemon, I never said that PS3 would outsell the 360 constantly but with a price drop, some decent games coming out and the Holiday season coming up. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony have sold 5 million PS3's in total after Christmas and probably more.

Also we have no idea whther they will be phasing out the 60GB version yet!!! They are using the next couple of months as a test to see which one they will continue to manufacture.

And even if they do, chances are like finalblade said that the 80GB version may drop in price

Cdemon, that is true... and then consider 120's red ring for the 360. Prices aside, only XBox-tards will be buying the 360s.
