Want to know why Microsoft is doing so badly in Japan? Japanese Internet forum 2channel lets you know why. Although most of the reasons given are fan boyish statements from Microsoft haters, there are some credible explanations pointing towards the advertising campaign Microsoft had in Japan.
It's a fact: Microsoft Japan is having a rough time. Sales of the Xbox 360 are consistently low. There are the occasion bright spots in which games like Blue Dragon or THE iDOLM@STER move a few extra machines. But, all and all, it's not enough really. In an E307 interview with Famitsu, former Xbox honcho Peter Moore said, "Why doesn't the Xbox 360 sell in Japan? I want to ask you." Well! Japanese internet forum 2channel weighed in with its opinion.

Microsoft is more about shooters, and Japan in general's more about Japanese RPGs and such...which PS2 had an overflow of. That's the biggest reason, really. The genre of games.
I said Japan just doesn't like MS this has nothing to do with me, did you even look at the link 2chan said what i quoted not me.
I did look at the link, and think that crap like 'it stinks like Sega Saturn stinks" is one of the most idiotic comments ever. I said that about you because you said "oh, nothing hit's home like this" gimme a break >_> The 360 has it's problems, but it does have some things that makes it a decent console, like Live, and fun shooters.
Oh and Turmoil911 yes i do say that but again that's is facts, it is poorly constructed. Everyone knows that so from that point it makes both of you bashing me for no reason.
And besides most people state that too, and i don't see them getting the far share of bashing. You like to pick and choose your targets. For instance Guticb says this as well and he gets bashed but he's got a point. I do the same, im not bashing MS i only saying im not going to get a faulty system, Since 33% is alot even from stores like Ebgames and such, not including the percentages going to MS headquarters. Im stating points, but hey keep thinking im bashing MS, its only going to make you look foolish in the end.
At most you can say im bashing MS is saying they bribe people and thats it. Thats what i feel say what you like but thats the only time i said anything remotely offense to them.
Although the lack of RPG's certainly have something to do with it
And surely you never owned a 360 in the first place, so why bash something from what you've heard rather than what you've experienced for yourself?

My input in the conversation - I don't really think that Microsoft being an American company has much to do with the 360's lack of success over there, AT ALL.
I highly doubt Japanese gamers would not choose a console simply because it isn't made by the Japanese, just like we don't reject Sony or Nintendo simply because they are not American.
But the 360 is mainly known for it's Shooters, which is not one of the most popular genres in Japan (as some people have already mentioned).
Sony and Nintendo appeal more to Japanese gamers because they are more well known for genres that are popular in Japan. (e.g. RPGs, Fantasy games, Party games, etc.)
... though, I suppose the fact that PS3 and Wii are made by Japanese people might help ... they can relate better to the Japanese public, moreso than Microsoft can.
