In a recent article posted at the official PlayStation website, Sony have described the risks of buying/using counterfeit controllers with the PlayStation 3 and how they plan to eradicate them from the market.

A recent consumer alert bulletin from Sony has outlined their plans to eradicate counterfeit Dualshock controllers from the market. They warm PlayStation 3 owners that these fakes are built by unreliable manufacturers and it's possible they may "ignite or explode" during use. Though Sony wouldn't be liable for any injuries caused by counterfeit gamepads, they are taking action via their latest round of firmware updates to patch out support for these imposters.

I'm pretty sure they're just blocking them for the simple fact that they're counterfeits. Not because they "explode". << As long as they don't block other 3rd party peripherals (like my SSF4 TE stick!) then I'm ok with this.

Apparently the update also killed the current jailbreak for now, as well as a lot of other 3rd party USB devices.

I remember when sony laptops were exploding a couple years ago. Probably pretty sensitive about stopping this.
