Are you using WiiConnect24 all day long then (the) Wii might have a problem. People who are leaving the Wii's service on are beginning to notice over-heating problems, and whilst the problems aren't as pronounced as the overheating problem on the XBOX 360, the GPU of the Wii can still get damaged. Fortunately the trouble has so far only happened with a handful of consoles, meaning that determining whether the problem is common to all Wii's is hard.

It is suggested that rather than leaving it on Wiiconnect24, that you keep it on standby as well as keeping it in a ventilated and cool room, to lessen the chance of your console getting hot and damaging the GPU.

Man what's with all these overheating consoles!?

I have left my PS3 on for at least 4 days straight folding@home with no problems. I guess Sony just did an amazing job when it came to designing the way it would cool itself. The amount of hot air put out the side vent really does seem like it's doing it's job perfectly.

I mean last generation you could leave your GC, XBOX, PS2 all on for long ass periods of time with no trouble.

Well as mentioned in the article, it isn't a problem with all Wii's (or at least they don't think it is), but I guess the PS3 really is something to be able to withstand being on all night and still not over heating.

well i guess when they try to incoporate that much technology inside that small a space, heating becomes a very diffficult design issue to tackle..

This has only happened to a few consoles, certainly within an acceptable console failure rates. I have seen several cases of PS3's refusing to play discs due to being too hot as well. Heat is simply becoming a more and more important issue with modern computers.

I should also point out that this isn't a problem with the console being on too long. When Wii enters its active standby mode, it remains connected to the internet. Its internal modem creates excess heat, but since the console is turned off, the fan does not run to cool the system off.

Anyway, this is old news. We were talking about this in the Wii forum months ago.

Everything needs a rest. Too much of one thing isn't a good thing, either. Especially with more expensive things, it's not good to just leave them on all the time, like the 360.

The thing is, the standby internet connection is only used for the Weather channel. It is easy to turn off, especially since none of its (Rumored) big features, like automatic game downloads, are in use yet.

what is this AUTOMATIC GAME DOWNLOAD you talk of?

Probably the over-heated wii's came from households in Texas, Arizona, or Los Angeles. My house stays cool okay, and I haven't had much problems with my little wii

This is why I don't keep WiiConnect24 on. (yellow light) I leave it on standby. (red light)

I have it with my yellow light on. I haven't had problems. Plus it's in a cool room and well ventilated room. Hopefully I should be fine.

Mine has been on the yellow light untouched for quite along time, just tried it out. Still seems to be working for me.

More overheating problems? Every console has had on article on this. Yeah, blame that idiot who put duct tape over the vents to cause a PS3 overheating article.

    Final Blade Jul 20, 07
Yea but thats not a problem, thats the moron who actually put the duct tape on the air vents, like i said there i understand his motive it just wasn't planned intelligently.
This isn't a problem with the wii, probably 10 out of the millions of consoles has this happen, its also a good tip on how to prevent it. So this isn't a big problem like the xbox problems.
So i don't see this as something major.

yeah, what's the downside of turning off wii connect 24? It just means you'll have to wait 2 seconds longer for the weather forcast

I always unplug mine at the back cause it's boiling when left on standby...

Mine has no problems. It's been connected since I got it, with the only exceptions being power failures and when I moved it from my smallass TV in my bedroom to the big one in the living room.

The weather channel doesn't work at all if you have the standby connection turned off, for some idiotic reason. It is simple to go in and turn it back on when you want to play, but it is still an unnecessary hassle.

actually, I found a way around this. you can turn on WII CONNECT 24, but turn Off STANDBY CONNECTION.
Now i no longer fear heating problems.

That's what he said. I keep Wiiconnect24 on, but keep the standby connection off and it won't let me use the weather or news channel. But then if I want to use it I turn it on, use it, and turn it off. It's so stupid.

I bought a fan for both my PS3 and Wii on the same day I bought the system. Noone's overheating my money. I remember a few year's back when my sister left the PS2 on for a week and when I got back to the house, it was perfectly fine.

Lol at the title. But if game console companies don't get the cooling right then it will be heck for them.

you can leave a gamecube on for 57 years, and it wouldn't overheat.
