I found him annoying, almost unlikable

Oh that just about killed me when they said he said he wouldn't return at all . . . whew, yes, It's pretty certain we know now he won't be the main playable character. Hopefully though he gets something big, like the one who finally defeats the whole enemy, or he actually BECOMES the biggest, main boss of the series.

Honestly anyone who thinks Hale is better than Capelli really hasn't played to many video games with great characters.

Hale and Capelli are practically the same. The typical mostly mute hero who saves the day.

Resistance is about killing chimeran with unique guns and discovering the secrets behind the chimeran virus and the cloven.

Not about popularity contests between two similar war heroes

Ah but when you're in it for the story, the plot, instead of just the "mindless killing FPS style gaming" then what happens with characters and such DOES matter.

The thing is though neither Hale nor Capelli advanced the plot with any real hint of subtlety. Sure Hale dies in the end, sure Capelli's the one that shoots him.

But as Lupin said, Resistance is driven by the Chimera and discovering where they came from and what role the Cloven play.

Sure that is the main point of the plot. But what I mean is that, if in the middle of the story there's a change of characters, it DOES matter. Not at much as if other larger points changed, but still matters a little.

The game's played in first person, meaning this is a role you've projected yourself into and as such there's no real change because characters in that position are afgncaap. Unless of course you're suddenly put into the role of an established character of the series, then it may be a problem.

Though I suppose a name and some pain induced grunts are all it takes to make an endearing character these days.
