At E3, Sony announced their newly designed PSP. They rambled on about a few things that excited fans, but it turns out one of those things was a lie. If you put the battery from the original PSP, you'd get 8-10 hours of gaming which is what Sony told us, but the new PSP will come with a smaller battery, only allowing 5 hours of gaming. Also, if you try to put the original PSP battery into the new PSP, the battery will bulge out. That's all the lies, but the rest is true so far.

After announcing the brand new slimline PSP at E3 one of the big bullet points that Sony hit on while trying to sell the redesign to the audience, both in attendance and worldwide, was that the new PSP's battery would last longer for gaming on the move. Hell, we even reported on the matter, the fools we were! However, it has now come to light that this information was more of a small white lie by the company, rather than being actual fact.

You see, if you have the battery from your original PSP put in the slimline, you'll be able to get 8-10 hours play, which is the number Sony touted at E3. However, the new PSP will come packed with a smaller battery, one that will only run for about 5 hours while gaming, which is a fair few hours less. Also, if you try and put the original battery in you PSP it won't fully fit in the slot and bulge out of the system, kinda like the same problem you will get if you put a GBA cart in the DS Lite.

So it seems not all is as we once thought. Still, the console will be 33 per cent lighter and 19 per cent slimmer and have some extra options, it will also be able to output high quality video. If that not enough it is also coming to Europe first, lucky us!

    O THE HUMANITY.

i'm sure most psp owners have grown used to the psp's crappy battery life.

What the hell? Even worse than it was before?

They certainly shouldn't have lied about what most had to be fixed. 5 hours is friggin' pathetic. I would prefer the normal PSP now.

Oh boy. 3-5 more hours of battery life is DEFINITELY worth it as long as it's sort of thinner and sort of lighter.

All the more reason to HATE Sony.

I don't remember them ever talking about it's battery power. And I saw their conference twice. It's been shown in writing the differences between the two weeks ago xD

8-10 hours my ass. The old one only lasts around 5 hours for me. So either we won't see much of a difference, or this will completely suck ass.

Where is the evidence for the shorter battery life? Just because the battery is smaller physically it does not mean it will last less.

    Trust me, yes it does.

5ft legs will go 5 miles, but 2ft legs will go 2 miles... theoretically speaking.

Why did it go down, this is just a shame but im sure I can handle it. Like it says I have got use to the short life of it.

*bleep*ing pathetic. 5 hours is nothing. You'll have to carry around an extra battery.

This was one of the biggest reasons why the GameGear and others failed against the GameBoy back in the day. Battery power. They'd die out quickly because they were more beefed up, like being colored, while the GameBoy stayed the same.

How pathetic can they get? Are they that desperate for money because the PS3 isn't selling at all? Dear lord, as xsynergyx said, 5 hours in nothing!

What the heck? They better create a better battery. How or why would they do that?

Maybe they'll have some kind of duel thing? Only time will tell I guess.

    1) Seriously, who the hell plays with their Portable system for more than 5 hours here? I spent a lot of time with my PSP in my vacation trip, never did it ONCE run out of power, and I was playing games like Killzone: Liberation and The Warriors.

    2) Because the battery is smaller it lasts less? Same can be said for Digital Memory...wait, no...a Memory Stick has a shitload more space than a bulky Memory Card.

A battery depends on a chemical reaction to create electricity. The bigger the battery, the larger the amount of chemicals that can react, and the longer the charge will last. So yes, size does matter with batteries.

Ok, let's say they haven't found a more efficient way to use the battery, who has any evidence that the new battery will be spent faster? EVEN THOUGH, the original lifespan is fine as it is, I see people bitching a lot, and I really doubt they play their PSP to the breaking point.

The article specifically says that the new battery has a smaller charge.

However, newcomers will be left out in the cold as the new PSP will come packed with a smaller battery, smaller in both size and the amount of charge it can hold

Does it say how efficiently the new PSP uses the battery?

    Yes.

"Fair few hours less, but around the same amount as the original PSP"?????

What the hell is the big deal everyone is complaining about again? It says 5 hours WHILE gaming (which, I dunno about you guys, it's more than enough for a Portable system), and it doesn't mention how long any other function of the PSP would take. I'd need to see this personally anyways.

People aren't complaining about the battery life itself, just the fact that Sony came out saying that the new design would boost battery life when it really doesn't. Not really a big deal except to those people who just enjoy watching Sony's PR department self destruct.

    Final Blade Jul 23, 07
I find this article false. But hey thats my take on it, and Seeker X has a point, why all this moaning and complaining about something, i personally play my games on the psp while the battery is charging or not. I could then play for 10 hours straight.

Yes, but then what about when you're riding in the car for a fair amount of hours, or somewhere where you can't carry around the charger or there is no outlet?

Anyways, we'll find out if it's true when it's released.

Well i only play for a few hours on the road, and maybe i could get a car adapter if there is one.

If this is all true, then I might just buy the original one. It also looks better than the silver one if you ask me.

I don't know if this is true, probably just a rumor. Maybe they would release an extended life battery after the PSP Slim's release?

5 hours sounds a little short, but in the long run, most kids shouldn't be playing video games for 5 hours at a time. I wouldn't care for a longer battery life, but the lie destroys me! Ok not really, but the PSP is a really good handheld. 5 hours of playing for a handheld with great graphics is pretty damn good in my eyes. But slimmer and smaller is good! Like the DS lite, a smaller size is good IMO. Than it doesn't bulk your pocket when you put it inside as much.

So... what they decided to do... was make it worse?...
I fail to see their logic.

I don't see what the problem is with the PSP battery life. If you work for a professional game company who has made a hand held console which does everything the PSP can do and has a better battery life, say aye! Didn't think so. Stop complaining. Designing stuff this complicated with a huge battery life isn't easy.
