Danny Mendez of Gamer Blorge has written an article about why he thinks the Nintendo Wii is not on the console war and no, it's not because the Wii is pulling out in front. He writes in the article that people that he knows that own a Wii, don't use it as their main gaming device, but instead use their 360 or PS3 and the Wii is something more for side gaming. He says the the PS3 and 360 is the real war, fighting for graphics, power, features and wireless gaming.

He then compares it to PC gaming. No one is competing with the PC because it's on it own category. Sure, Apple and Microsoft may compete in gaming later on, but at the moment, no one is going up against Microsoft. Nintendo has somehow created its own category, something off to the side and winning alone, no matter how good or bad the PS3 and 360 do.

As an outsider looking in to the gaming industry, I cannot help but note that the Nintendo Wii has placed itself in its own category, a category significantly different than the the group the PS3 and Xbox 360 find themselves in.

I don't know a single person who owns a Nintendo Wii and is satisfied with the console on its own. Every person that I know who has one, doesn't use the console as their primary gaming machine. They either have an Xbox 360 (usually) or a PS3 and then a Nintendo Wii as sort of "toy" to play with on occasion.

The true console war belongs to the Xbox 360 and Sony PS3. It's then that price matters, that game selection matters. It's then that graphics, power, features, wireless, all of that matters. None of that matters for Nintendo because many people are going to buy a Wii whether or not they own another console.

The theory can be compared to PC gaming. No one competes with PC gaming because it's an established category all on its own. Perhaps we'll see Apple and Microsoft competing in the PC gaming category eventually, but as for right now the PC has no competition in the gaming arena.

I say that the Wii is not in a completely different category, but is still different. I think it is a large part of the console war. However, it does not seem to be enough on it's own for more hardcore gamers.

I see where he's getting at, but I don't think it just doesn't count. The Wii is just a little off to the side. If the Wii makes a few changes, then they'll be fulling equal to compete against the 360 and PS3.

Lol @ the "people that he knows that own a Wii, don't use it as their main gaming device" comment. What a good reliable source, Danny

To be honest, the same can apply for the PS3 and 360. Some people might buy a PS3 simply for it's Blu-Ray Player, and so on.

Makes sense but still i think the wii was ment for party's and etc rather than a hardcore war, which seems to be the case for Sony's ps3 and MS xbox. But maybe the wii doesn't care for wining a console war or even this gen.

I fit the description of a person who has a 360 and a Wii and just uses the Wii occasionally. Yet, I can't say that the Wii is for side gaming and that's all it could ever be. No way. The exclusives are starting to come out and online play is starting to emerge as well. I've noticed that the people in the Wii forum have been arguing over the Wii having too many casual games as opposed to hardcore games. Other than 360's being defective, one thing that does hurt them is the lack of casual games. I've mentioned in another news post that not having crappy movie games wouldn't kill the 360 and PS3. I've been noticing that's the case, though. Apart from that, everyone is saying that the large amount of titles to come out this year for both 360 and PS3 are mostly hardcore. It might be true but everyone is making it sound like all of those are going to be good. Besides the big names, it's not much of a big deal. Nintendo has good but little hardcore games. Many good and bad casual games. PS3 and 360 have good and bad hardcore games. Barely any good casual games.

Sorry, went a little off topic there. Just wanted to get that out.

I think he has a point also. The only people I knwo that have a Wii are buying it and then 6 months later never touch it(I know this is besides the point) but that's because they have another console as well.

I think that they might still win this war if they are apart of it, but then the next gen after this, they may fall behind so it could be a mistake to say they are part of the war.

The Wii is different; it isn't remote, though. It is not an alien substance, it just uses *pretty* advanced technology, which is why it's WINNING in the WAR.

its winning the "war" because of the family friendliness of the system and the price point

I have to agree with this article though, and I have been thinking the same thing for a long time now. The Wii can't be in the same category with machines double its price first of all. Then, how can it be in the same category with machines that outdo it in everything to do with graphics and technology.

Anyone who thinks the Wii is actually party of the console war is sadly mistaken...just because the system came out at the same time as the ps3, doesn't give it rights to be in the "fight"

But the Wii is selling 400% more over Amazon...

thats probably an inflated number because it wasn't in stock before and now it is. A single burst in activity doesn't indicate the success of a platform

    and your point?

MOST Parents see it as a $250 game system and dont care about it past, very few parents are going to buy a $500-600 system for their kids (age 5-14) enjoyment

Exactly why its selling. If the ps3 and xbox was 299 and the wii was the same price, im sure it wouldn't be selling the same way.
And thats what i have been saying for months, thank you Jeterocks.

If you're second place for everyone, than you're first. Much like a hammock, this theory holds no water.

I tried to argue this article's point a year or so ago and no one listened, and instead informed my forum and myself that the Wii would crash and burn.

Now that it's stomping faces, you're all ready to listen aren't you? <3

Wii took a head start, but is getting tired quickly. The 360 took a prototype shoe, and now there's side affects, the PS3 did the same but they're getting lucky I guess.

I think it's because the Wii was innovative at first and it created a lot of hype. But the PS3 and 360 are solid gaming machines, and not messing around with all this family/arcade stuff - I have a friend with a PS2 and Wii and he plays his PS2 more that the Wii.

I never thought the Wii could keep up anyway, it sucks in the graphics department, they put too much effort into making it all shiny and easy on the eyes when they should have focused more on power and features.

I'd never compare the Wii to the 360 or the PS3. It's an entirely different experience.

I agree, on certain levels. About the PS3 and 360 battling over graphics and all that, I can understand that -- because they always have done. Nintendo may be one step behind all the time, which is what I appreciate, as they're usually pretty popular at one point.
