PS3 price had to drop, reckons Nintendo bigwig

Everyone and their monkey seems to have an opinion on the PS3 price drop (or lack thereof), and Nintendo's George Harrison is proving to be more vocal than most regarding Sony's positioning now that the 60GB PS3 has dropped from $599 to $499. Evidentally, he's not scared by the competition.

George Harrison was asked for his thoughts on Sony’s decision to drop the price of the PlayStation 3 in North America from $599 to $499.

"I don't think they had any choice," opined Harrison, "It's pretty soon after launch to be dropping your price, but I'm pretty sure they had to do it. They had to start momentum in some form, but we don't think it's something that'll hurt us. It doesn't really affect us, since they're still far enough away."

We’ll politely ignore the fact that the GameCube’s price dropped less than six months after launch, George.

    You don't have to worry about it until people get bored of the Wii and turned towards the 360 or PS3 for different types of gaming.

    Well i don't know but i think they lowered the price do to cheap parts that makes making the console cheaper.

    They had saved $150 in manufacturing costs they could drop the price so they did heh, simple as that.

      I wonder when the ps3 60GB finally phases out, do you think they will lower the 80GB(non bundle)to $499 or even lower. Since by that time costs will be even cheaper or no.

    They may well do, it would make sense but after more time.

    I think that they did have to lower it this time, he's right there but I think that this George guy is rather dismissive and like it said at the end, the GC did the same.

    It's kinda' his job to say things like this anyway, but I suppose he could've said nothing.

    Hmmm maybe instead of screwing Europe by not cutting the price, there actually going to be screwing Americia when the the new 80GB version gets a price cut everywhere but Americia

    No idea why they would do that but Sony are known to do strange things

      Not really all it has different is space and all you need to do is exchange the HD to a higher one your self.

    It really had no choice, it was in dead last (Might still be) so, it's not a big deal. We should see another drop soon.

    I think its good that they lowered the price of the ps3 by 100$ but I still think that in the UK 800$ is too much money.

    Its amazes me that no one reads what i and Existenz said above, they could afford a price cut cause the materials were cheaper and manufacturing the system was cheaper.

      If Sony could have gotten away with keeping the same price point I'm sure they would have (as would any company). A price cut appeals, which is what Sony needs right now.
