While PS3 and Xbox 360 fanboys maul one another with rampant regularity, stats provided by habit-trackers Nielsen Co. is today offering that the greying PlayStation 2 is still the number one console choice for the majority of videogames players.

According to new "GamePlay Metrics" stats published today by habit-trackers Nielsen Co. Sony’s long-standing PlayStation 2 accounted for a massive 42 percent of all console usage tracked during the month of June. Microsoft’s original Xbox came in second with 17 percent, which is perhaps odd considering its recent lack of software support. The Xbox 360, GameCube, and Wii slotted into third, fourth and fifth.

I'm one of the PS2 owners. And I don't plan to get a PS3 anymore, at least until summer 2008

    PS2's a good console, I'll keep it for a while before getting a PS3.

Approx 33,000 people surveyed. It's hardly a dent in the gaming population.

Does make some sense though. PS2 has a massive library of games and is significantly cheaper at the moment.

And don't forget that library comes available for ps3 as well

And of course its still number one cause sony products are the best.

The number of players with last gen systems, especially the PS2, completely outnumbers the current gen. systems buy a giant margin. Not a big surprise there is more playtime on those systems.

I wonder where Sony's going to go with this. Bet they were planning on just having the PS2 die out since PS3's release. I still have my PS2, and when friends come over, that's the console we end up playing when we get into a gaming mood.

Whenever I go to a friends house or they come here. That's the console we play the most. We find a good type of fighting/co-op game and we just play for hours. I've had my PS2 for maybe 4 years and it's been used alot that my original PS2 controllers R2 button is barely working.

I do plan to switch over to PS3 one day, possibly towards my birthday/Christmas, but at the moment with the sky-high prices I'm not really surprised that the PS2 beats the next-gen consoles.

I do agree the PS2 is a good console. It had many games you could just have hours of fun with. But, the problem with it mainly wasw the online. The PS3 and Xbox 360 now have such great Online system, I can't play the PS2 without thinking It needs online xD.

I still have my PS2 but haven't even looked at it since owning a PS3. This news shocked me at first but after thinking about it for 10 seconds, makes perfect sense. Might not change for a while either since Sony keep mentioning their 10 year plan.

The PS2 is cheap, but in my opinion, I don't like it that much. Yeah, kill me.

The PS2 is indeed a good console. I plan to play it for a while until the PS3's price drops. Maybe sometime in 2008.

I mostly play PS2 games on my PS3 so I dont see this as a surprise. PS2 is a great console with tons of games and its still making more unlike the xbox and gamecube which have been scrapped.

Not too surprising. The PS2 is awesome and has sold more than all the current and last gen systems combined. It's no shock that it is being played so much. I still whip it out every once in a while, especially for Jak II. XBox being second is a little surprising, though, since I don't know anyone who still plays it. I know a few 360 and Wii owners, but nobody who still plays their original XBox.

    Oh, and kill xsynergyx again.

Yeah, certainly comes as no suprise. It was the best console when it was in it's prime and at that time nobody really bothered with the Xbox or GameCube (Although I myself did buy them a few years after the PS2's release).

Played my ps2 for 6 and a half years without getting bored. Although the playtime for me is getting less and less as I play the Wii more often.

not a massive percentage asked in this survey but I guess it is something. Like said abouth, not a massive dent. I would think it would be like this even if you asked a higher percentage and they will all say the Ps2 including myself.
