    FAIL!

The director doesn't know who Nathan Fillion is? How can he be a director and not know these actors? Wow. Just goes to show you how self-absorbed and out of touch people in Hollywood are.

Not really. There's an entire team of people who are put up to casting, who most likely talked a lot of it over with Naughty Dog. The director's job is to overlook filming; why should he care about some second-rate cable TV star?

Also, Fillion wouldn't work as Drake anyway. Am I the only one who has seen him in Castle? If they did cast him, people would complain that Drake has gotten fat.

Director's still oversee the casting process when the casting director brings back potential candidates for a movie.

For instance, Christopher Nolan reviewed audition tapes for the Dark Knight along witht he casting management because he was actually serious about how he wanted the actor to portray Batman. Writers, sometimes, also give some input on who they want to see cast in a certain role (sometimes specifically writing a role for a certain actor and leaving it up to the director/casting director to give the final say.)

I kind of don't blame his reaction here. The guy asking the questions didn't explain himself very clearly.

I won't say I'm surprised about Russell. He already demonstrated a while back that he wants nothing to do with the actual games.

They were kind of rushing everyone and he didn't have time to explain himself. I thought he did a good job with the few seconds he had...also, he doesn't seem to be a journalist so it wasn't like he was doing it for a publication and prepped the questions in advance.
