Breast Physics: A Growing Social Problem?

xsynergyx | July 27, 2007 | News | Misc
Gaming Today has written an article on the breast physics in gaming. They say that all people need to do, is slap on some sort of sex appeal on a game and it'll sell. They question the state on why video games have females with large "assests". Their concern is who enjoys the eye candy and doesn't seperate it from reality and the unrealistic, especially for young gamers. The young gamers will then expect females in reality to strut around in skimy clothes. What do you think? Are big breasted females manditory when trying to give sex appeal in a game?
Now Breast Physics (unlike say fluid dynamics or quantum mechanics) is not a recognized field of scientific research. Evolving with the video game genre from its earliest days in Custer’s Revenge for the 2600 up through Leisure Suit Larry and the Dead or Alive titles (especially DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball ), this field of study “floated” to the top of the video game simulation industry (thanks to the huge number of game designers who simply never got out of the office enough to interact with real women).

There are quite a few examples today of games built and sold completely around this unique simulation field and the latest game to show off advances in breast physics simulation - Dead or Alive 4 bounced onto the Xbox 360 in full color-high definition glory, or the numerous scantily clad elves running around in games like World of Warcraft - which is what brought this subject to mind.

The biggest concern though as someone who enjoys eye candy as much as the next man is: Does this unrealistic portrayal of human anatomy set unrealistic expectations for young male gamers when they actually encounter the real thing? Honestly think of all the boys out there who’ve learned through their video games that women’s anatomy comes with independent suspension! Real women don’t strut around in skimpy clothes while their chests jiggle like strapped on Jell-O for everyone to observe. More importantly how can any real female ever hope to live up to the fantastic behavior of these modeled mammaries?

With all the androgenous males in games these days, sometimes breasts are the only way to tell them apart from the ladies! ZING! Well I guess clothing also works, but even that's not always a trusty indicator.

      Lol, truth in here^.

If you put girls with big breasts in Teen games, then yeah, maybe it contributes to a growing social problem, but for M games, I think it's a wonderful thing to have girls with desirable assets. I love watching them while I play the game. It's entertainment! I'm old enough to go out into the real world and not expect big breasts from every girl I meet.

They're just girls in action games, like how we like our girls in action flicks. There's more at stake when a hero's saving a hot chick. (Or when a hot chick is shooting the guns!)

It's interesting how the article is full of busty gaming characters. Attention span wavering...

Haha, Soul Calibur is actually a good fighting game though, I think.

I know where what you mean, Xenctuary. I saw the word "Breast" in the title and my mind drifted for a few minutes before I remembered what I was reading.

Honestly...me and many I know don't buy DoA or Soul Calibur games for the girls. For one, my favorite characters in both those series are male, and I buy those games for the fighting, because it's pretty damn good.

But yeah, sex appeal sells, no doubt. It's getting ridiculous and over the line. Good God...Taki's breasts are like two basketballs...they gotta stop with the exaggerations.

Would the Heavenly Sword Demo have been good with a flat chick? Of course, or at least for me. Would it have been worse with a flat chick? Yes, not a huge difference, but noticable.

I didn't know Nariko had breast physics, I really wasn't eyeing her at all. The backgrounds were more beautiful. Not to say that she didn't look great, when they closed in on her face I don't believe I've seen a more realistic looking video game character.

I wasn't eyeing her either. Just looking for a recent example. I guess she would at least have slight physics. Or a really tight shirt.

Eh, all DoA girls are the same person with a different face and hair. They exaggerate too much, a girl standing in one place has their breast go in eight different directions.

People never buy those games, though. They just rent them.

It's all about marketing. Sex & Violence sells. So they add them to games. If we didn't show a preference about them they would not incorporate them in their games.

Objectively, having physics for each body part adds to realism but I don't think they added breast physics in order to increase realism

Even in Blue Dragon, Zola's breasts bounce when she moves. It's funny =D

In these fighting games though the breasts are becoming ridiculous. All those polygons and none used for a bra :-(

Plus those DoA girls must be having some serious back problems with all that bra-less jumping around

ESRB raters will probably just stare when rating a game and forget what they're rating, giving games with busty chicks in it an E for Everyone.

I have not brought a game based on sex appeal, DOA4 I got as I wanted a fighting game on the 360 and to be honest I was not exspecting what it offered, but yeh it is nice to watch now and then while you play.. ^^

Yeah the Dead or Alive series are really great...
I don't see a problem with it, but I don't by games based on sex appeal. A lot of games I've bought happened to have the beutiful girls in it and I can't protest.

I couldn't give two shits if a game character had big breasts. As long as it had good gameplay and graphics and indeed a decent story, that's all I want from it.

I would think unrealistic representations in movies and by music stars would be a bigger concern. I don't think this is exactly unique to video games, or even as widespread as in other mediums.

You state an interesting point/view there Insanity and I would have to agree with you, they do need to focus more on but nowadays gaming gets the blame for everything.

Gameplay is an important part of the game, and that makes it even more utterly ridiculous that impossible breasts are seen as necessary to sell them.
