Sony's PS2 hit, the Grand Theft Auto Series is no longer exclusive to them. And recent talks about recommending GTAIV on the 360 have let us believe that Rockstar and Sony aren't on good terms after all. But with the power of the cell and Blu-Ray capabilities comes Rockstar's next big hit, an exclusive title is just about in production for the PS3.

When Sony passed on the exclusive rights to Grand Theft Auto 4, many saw it as a sign of insanity from the leadership camp. The latest episode of Spike TV's Game Head, however, reveals that perhaps they had a plan all along. SCEA president Jack Tretton pulled that curtain back for host Geoff Keighley, casually mentioning that Rockstar has made an exclusive agreement to bring "their next big franchise" to the PlayStation 3 and no, he's not talking about L.A. Noire.

Shortly before the show hit the tubes, SCEA's director of 3rd party relations, Michael Shorrock, confirmed this statement on the official US PlayStation blog adding, "Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that.. This is really a win-win situation for both companies."

So what is it exactly? Sony has made an agreement with Rockstar to say no more concerning the deal nor the title involved. From a developer that has tackled everything from gang violence to ping pong, your guess is as good as ours.

I don't honestly see why Sony passed on the exclusive rights. GTA is a huge series and it's enough to make Sony huge profits, and IMO it was a stupid move by them.

Like i keep saying PS2 exclusivity doesn't mean PS3 exclusivity. And you know who knows maybe GTA is finishing up. And this one is suppose to be a bigger hit, so i suspect good move on sony part.
Remember Sony wants t new games and franchises to show off the power of the cell and the ps3, what better way is start a new game that no one has even seen b4.

I agree but like they said, that was their strategy all along. This new franchise is supposedly said to dominate GTA. I think this is a brilliant news.

So if it wasnt for Sony saying it was okay to go Multiplatform Rockstar would not be able to do this.. so Microsoft fanboys really should be thanking Sony for allowing them

Well to be honest Sony value their business friendship more than a game, i mean if they had been assholes about it, Rockstar wanted a multi platform Grand Theft Auto had Sony said "No, you have a deal with us you stick to that" then when GTA 5 is in production Rockstar just won't bother Sony because of that relationship killing dominance, atleast allowing Rockstar to develop the game for the Xbox 360, Sony keep the game and get LA Noire and this "Untitled" apparent powerhouse of a game aswell, good times i say.

Sony don't own Rockstar, they had no choice wether GTA4 was going to the 360 or not. They may have tried to pay them off but remember that the GTA has never actually been excluisive in the first place and with the small PS3 install base probabley had no choice if they wanted to shift a decent number of copies

I wonder what this new game will be like?
