Microsoft Says No To Xbox 360 Core Discontinuation Rumors

Supernouva | July 30, 2007 | News | XBOX 360
Whoever thought that the Xbox 360 Core system would suffer the same fate as the 20GB PS3, they were wrong. Microsoft still feels that the Core system is important to the Xbox family, so it's not going anywhere.
In the wake of credible rumors of a $50 price drop for the $400 Xbox 360 Premium package, there are some slightly sketchier rumblings about the $300 Core system. Namely, that it has been discontinued in the US.

An anonymous tipster wrote to Wired News this morning saying that he had photos from Best Buy's inventory system showing that the Core had been discontinued. Attempts to contact him failed, but Joystiq has what are apparently the pics in question.

Microsoft's response was succinct: "No. Xbox 360 Core remains an important member of the Xbox 360 family." Maybe it's just Best Buy that's giving up? Maybe it's fake.

Good to hear that it is staying around as it is the basics for something to start to getting the conolse. Good idea in not getting rid of it.

Oh, okay.. so your "friend" at Best Buy (aka random douche who knows jack shit) is a more reliable source than the company who produces the consoles.

Um actually he owns the store and knows more on this than a regular worker. Oh and BTW look on other sites this is labeled as rumor.

It would have been a better move to just include hard drives on all systems. That way it wouldn't have limited game developers and left "less serious gamers" with a crippled console not capable of online play without additional purchases.

Either way it's nice to see the lower price option still there.

This is good for those who want to take things slow with the 360. No HD gives them the choice of buying a 20GB HD or a 120GB HD.

Reading this comment made me change my opinion on this matter quite dramatically, as you do have a very valid point there saying people have a choice.

I do still think though that eventually the Core does need to go.

    This one is useless.

The playstation is already way more powerful than the xbox, why keep the inferior xbox as well?

Consumer choice has nothing to do with which console is "more powerful". Your logic would dictate that all low-range electronic devices should stop also production. Let's stop selling all of those smaller sized televisions without high-definition. And what about that toaster that doesn't nuke your bread? It's gotta go.

The core system is fine to be still be in production. Its mostly for those who can afford to spend too much but still want the console it does help them people doesn't it.
