Not sure if it wholly "deserved" its sales; it DID have an engrossing story, but it still had a lot of gameplay shortcomings.

It has bad sales because it wasn't that good. The story was good but the gameplay especially the platforming felt like the game was on auto pilot. There was literally no physical way to fail them as the game held your hand 24/7 there were so many things in the game where it did that. It was like Prince of Persia a few year back instead of re-spawning you practically where you died to make it easy, Enslaved just didn't want to let you die.. Such a weird implementation of essentially the same feature in PoP.

Didn't they blame poor Heavenly Sword sales on something similar?

I think they did though they could have easily blamed the lack of PS3 hardware in gamers homes. I mean when there are 50 million PS3's out there you only need 10-20% buy it you have sold a lot of copies. When Heavenly Sword released there were only about 4 million consoles out there so they needed a good 70-80% to buy the game to even guarantee good sales with or without a busy holiday season.
