Nintendo legend Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto has this week spoken out on the mass appeal of the Nintendo Wii, hailing the innovative little machine as being responsible for vast sways of people finally pricking up their ears and taking notice of videogames.

The Wii isn’t just good news for Nintendo’s accountants, y’know - it’s also been beneficial for gaming as a whole. At least, that’s the view of Nintendo design guru Shigeru Miyamoto, who reckons that people are "finally taking notice" of games, after a spell where videogaming found itself in the shadows.

Chatting to The Mercury News, Miyamoto was asked about whether he felt vindicated by the Wii’s success. "I think it is not necessarily vindication, but I do get the distinct feeling that because of the Wii, people all over the world are finally taking notice of video games again, when they haven't for a while."

In the past video games appealed to a certain group of people, for example children and single men it could be described as a narrow path but now the Wii (and even the DS) has made that narrow path into a wide road, people who would never dream of buying them are doing so now. My parents want a Wii more then I do, that speaks for it self. Its a shame though that the PS3 and Xbox 360 isn't as attractive to as many different types of people as the Wii did.

I guess he is correct to a degree as it has opened it up a bit more and brought more people into the gaming scene from what there was before. I personally think though the DS has done this over from what the Wii has currently released with the Brain Games and Nintendogs trying to reach at the new market in gaming.
