Information from the Australian Sony Experience More event shows that Sony has sold 6 Million PS3s worldwide. I wonder if Sony means 6 Million Consoles have been shipped or 6 Million have actually been sold.

We recently reported that Sony had sold 4.48 Million PlayStation 3's Worldwide, but this figure was in fact a little dated (being up until Q1 2007) and we are now almost in Q3. New information from the Australian Sony 'Experience More' event, held in Sydney, revealed by Sony puts the actual figures at approximately 6 million units sold.

Down under the PlayStation has sold 64,000 units and Sony Computer Entertainment MD Michael Ephraim explained to the audience that “on a slow week, the PS3 was selling around 2,500 units - putting it ahead of all other direct console competitors in the market.”

In related news according to Carl Rose, the Managing Director of Sony Australia - Blu-ray is dominating the market in Australia, with roughly 80 percent of all HD content (excluding PS3 games) being sold on Blu-ray discs, rather than on HD DVD.

Right now, there are 107 Blu-ray titles on the market, and with adoption rates now reaching "a satisfactory level", Sony promises to double that number by Christmas. This comes in light of this morning's announcement that retail chain Target would only be stocking Blu-ray players and discs, rubbing a little more salt in the wound of the competing high definition format.

I think it means shipped because I know for a fact that they're shpping 6 million consoles. I also believe they're only at 4 or 5 million. (The source states so too)

Still, it'll be good for Sony if they actually have sold that many, but I'm doubting it at the moment.

It could be true, 6 million shipped doesn't seem like a lot, since there's 6 billion people in the world and counting... but not everybody owns a PS3 (families etc)

Yeah, but I submitted an article (I believe it's still pending) and it says Wii shipped 9 million, Playstation 3 shipped 6 million and the Xbox 360 shipped 1 million. It would be a coincedince if they have sold 6 million and shipped 6 million as well.

They already shipped some before didn't they? Or is it 6 million total?

I feel like an idiot commenting so much in the same article, but to answer, I think they're shipping 6 million each quarter or something.

They need more than this. Anyway, keep trying Sony. Eventually, I'll be one of your millions.

In the next two years, that's when Sony will really be needing sales. Otherwise they might lose some more excluseives which I hope isn't true.

Not bad for a their first [almost] year, what with it's price range and all. Hah, Finalblade, we KNOW you'll be supporting Sony, you seriously don't have to say it.

Here at least it's very easy to find PS3s on the shelves so while they have shipped 6 million I'd doubt all of those are sold, on the other hand wiis are very hard to come by. They really need to cut the price over here in the UK most people are still hesitant because of the big price tag.

This could be true. They shipped 6 million and when they announced a price drop they started selling like crazy. Almost all stores are out of 60 gigs. So its a possability that they are close to 6 million.
