The game doesn't even have a specific release date and it is already being critisized for racism. After the revealing of the trailer in E3, a blog website dedicated for African women criticized the game. Here is a quote from the blog.

The new Resident Evil video game depicts a white man in what appears to be Africa killing Black people. The Black people are supposed to be zombies and the white man's job is to destroy them and save humanity…

This is problematic on so many levels, including the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young... fearing, hating, and destroying Black people.

...right....but HEY, let's ignore RE4 which had Leon basically slaughtering Hispanic people in Spain cuz....we all know that Hispanic people don't count. >_>

IMO...they should just shut the hell up and get over themselves.

The lack of thought some people who get offended by this annoys me. I understand if black zombies where upset by this but it only takes a person to think the guy in the game is killing ZOMBIES that just happen to be black. They kill white zombies and nobody cares.

Agreed. This is stupid. Yes, race does play a part in the game, but it isn't racist. I love the setting of RE5, as it's rarely ever seen in a game. But hey, this is free hype for Capcom...

The game is set in Africa and the people living there are black...well damn, that's shocker isn't it!

I saw these kind of articles coming as soon as I found out this game was set in Africa.

Well Existenz, I lost just about all respect I had for you in that one comment. Anyone has the right to disagree with the statement, but the ignorance you just displayed is overwhelming.

Look everyone, its obvious the people in charge of the blog have no knowledge of the Resident Evil series, or maybe even games in general, so you shouldn't be surprised that they said nothing about the Spanish people in RE4 or any other; that should be common sense. The point I do agree with, is that racism does start young and it is taught. Nobody is born a racist. However, children (once again) should not be playing Resident Evil 5 and the responsibility lies on the parents.

And for the record, black people are not inhuman savages, human beings are. The sad thing is that the ignorant people of this world don't even know they are ignorant.

This is like the controversy over that game with a gun fight in Manchester Cathedral. They don't seem to grasp the difference between real life and a game. Nobody no matter how stupid is going to think from this game all Africans are zombies ready to kill you.

Bullshit. It's nothing to do with racism. That some people are ignorant enough to choose to interpret it that way just because they can is the real problem.

So its racism when its black people that are zombies but all the other Resi's zombies looked white to me but thats not racism. Same old society.

The author of that blog post is ignorant and a racist herself. She even stereo types Chris Redfield as an "all-American boy".

The post was very amateur and imo needs to be pulled. If you read through all the comments absolutely no one agreed with her racist frame of mind. I did not even think of the whole "racism" side of RE5 until her article. Why must people always play the "race" card?

She's not even African American! "for this white girl". So, where was she for all the other Resident Evil games? where was the rants and complaints from her about oppression and racism in RE4 where they were all Spaniards? She PHAILs at journalism.

"Live in the past, we make it last." - Phil Anselmo

I'm not speaking for the entire race, but it seems to me that blacks are the ones keeping racial issues alive. Why think of it as a white man killing black men when it's intended to be a man killing other men? Blacks want racial equality, but they're the ones who keep on separating themselves from everyone else.

I guess the Tyrant in RE2 was prejudice as well; he killed a lot of people and some happened to be black. Holy shit.

And how exactly is an M-rated game marketed to young kids? Don't you have to be 17-18 to buy this shit? However, a ten year old can walk into a music store and buy any popular rap CD, which usually promotes violence, sexism and criminal activity.

    Yeah, nice logic there.

People like that bring my piss to a boil. I didn't see anyone complain about GTA San Andreas when there was a black person killing white people and stealing their cars. Blacks weren't offended even though they were being portrayed negatively in that game. This lady needs to get the sand out her vagina or were going to have Duke Lacrosse part 2.

But Africans who live in America are called African-Americans.

So even though people said it's set in Africa and they are black there, then it's still racism. And racism is not right, it's illegal.

If its set in Africa, then there would be Africans, not African-Americans. bakfromon, who are you to say that black people were not offended by San Andreas? And I don't think anyone read my first post. This blog is obviously from someone who doesn't play Resident Evil or videogames. RE5 is simply an opportunity. What are you all expecting?

Well for people who don't play video games and don't understand the series it does look kinda messed up. And like a commenter on the blog said, they do look significantly less like zombies than in RE4. And besides, doesn't Africa have enough problems already?

The vision of the game is unfortunately easy quite to distort at this stage, what with images of the lone Caucasian warrior against an angry mob of African/Congo villagers and soldiers. It's bound to be challenge for Capcom to ensure its (admittedly inspired) vision of survival in war torn lands where real horror is already taking place is not taken out of context by the general populace.

We've yet to hear an official outcry from the race and cultures concerned however, so much of this is blog-style saber rattling.

Resident Evil 4 had an American in a small Spanish village. All of the people there were Hispanic, and you could kill every one of them. They weren't even zombies (they were being controlled through medical infection). This is really no more racist than that.

Honestly, people in Africa are usually African. I don't see what's wrong with that. My German friend doesn't mind Call of Duty or any of the other slew of WWII games. I've seen a number of games exclusively killing people of my race. Do I care? No. I don't just look at skin colour. It isn't intended for racial purposes. I'm sick of people saying "Well, the people are of [insert race here], so it must be racist!!!". Capcom has had American zombies and Hispanic villagers before. They aren't attacking the human Black population now. Expecting people of a certain race to get a certain form of treatment is racial seperation.

I freaking hate thosse kind of people; the kind that dedicate their lives to pointing out small things that can be construed as racist to create equality, when by doing so they are only perpetuating racism by creating reverse racism. I hope they dont change the game just to spite those racist bitchs.

They would have to completely revamp the entire game to "fix" this. So it won't be happening

How come it's always blacks complaining about racism? I mean if it was vice versa we wouldn't be hearing about this right now...

Sometimes it isn't even black people complaining, it's some old white fag who thinks just because a african person gets hurt, it's instantly racist because of past reasons.

I'm sure there'll be protesting sooner or later.

Guarentee you, if it was about any OTHER race, nothing would be said. You could talk on TV that your friends with a black person and they are your best friend and somebody would say "Oh, he is racist. Why did he mention the black person for?" It's shit like this that prevents world peace. Human stupidity.

These "Zombies" are black Africans, but they do not seem to have been portrayed as clearly as previous RE titles as clear-cut DEAD ZOMBIES.

This fact itself is indicative of how the game capitalizes on our already existing preconceived conceptions and fear of black people. To the developers, the fact that the enemies were BLACK was scary enough. They didn't need to add an extra layer of dead-ness or zombie-ness... They just had to make them look like "violent black people" and it's enough to scare the shit out of you, as evidenced by comments in response to the trailers.

And to the people that complain that it's black people that keep the race issue alive...
Of Course Black People Will Keep The Issue Alive! Who else will? Will the white people in power want the public to keep questioning the US's history of slavery and injustice toward black people, and the continuation of that prejudice that keeps many from equal oppurtunities like jobs and education? No! White people get annoyed whenever the race issue comes up. Just read all the above comments. It is hard to know what it is like to be in the shoes of the wronged and oppressed. White people will not want to talk about the issue, even when things are clearly racist. They enjoy the benefits of the structure of a racist society. If black people do not continue to talk about race and persist in demanding fairer treatment, who else will?

Capcom does a GOOD thing by adding diversity in their games, and people argue that they are being racist? Pfft! That's ridiculous!
After all, Japan isn't the most racially-diverse country... But rather than staying in "safe ground" and basing RE5 in a typical city/mansion area, Capcom have gone out on a limb and introduced the RE series to a completely new type of location - the African jungle.
So I think it's pretty brave of them to base the game around Africa and Africans, with the risk of being deemed as "stereotyping black people" or "being racist".

And if they were racist, wouldn't they make a JAPANESE man kill the Africans, as opposed to a white person?

      FRoGBuster Aug 3, 07
True, I agree with you on that point, and applaud Capcom in venturing out onto new landscapes. The townships of Africa may be territory untouched by Any developer in any genre, but my point was that they could have been more sensitive about the race/colonial issue. If there are some subtle racist elements in their game, like RE4 Might have had with hispanics, it may be pardonable, but to have a blatantly controversial condition like White man Surviving hordes of black africans in foreign land is questionable to say the least. There Are ways to keep the game in this new landscape without exoticizing it and creating such an obvious white vs. black frame of context.

        Miss Razz Aug 4, 07
But remember ... This isn't the first time Capcom has introduced a black character to the RE series, so they're hardly "attacking" black people ... or depicting them as "inhuman savages", as the article suggests.
Instead, they are depicting zombies as inhuman savages ... just as they have during the entire RE series.

Clearly the article-writer has missed the few black people who have been on the good side, in previous RE games. They weren't depicted as savages... And why is that? - because they weren't zombies.
