Microsoft's taken yet another swipe at Sony, and this time it's Bill Gates that has carried out the low blow. During a recent Microsoft's investor chats, Bill Gates said

"So we've always wanted to be a company that got the benefit of the scale, going back to the beginning where we said, hey we're not a one-product company. Many of our competitors were one-product companies. Now they're not one-product companies, but Sony's just in video games, Nokia's largely just in mobile phones, IBM's largely in enterprise type software situations. And so is it a benefit to us that we work across these realms that we can expose you to the same user interface at home that you get at work? We think so. But there's a lot of execution behind taking that and getting the right things in the marketplace."
Ofcourse, someone must have mentioned to Bill Gates, that Sony also make TV's, Mobile Phones, Computers, Laptops and that's not all that Sony create.

According to Gates, plans for the Video Gaming part of Microsoft will include something that makes video gaming, not just something you do in one location (maybe a Microsoft Handsheld device is in the works..) and something that opens up new game genres (what could they possibly be?).

On to more edifying speeches from the world's most generous man. Bill's seen Web 2.0, he's seen mobile devices (and Zune), and he's seen the future. Not only does he want to deliver Microsoft Office over the web rather than have you worry about storage, he also wants to extend this notion of 'software as a service' to gaming. Here's what he had to say, "Yes, the service concept, we'll see it at the consumer end with things like Xbox Live, where signing up for contests, and being a spectator, staying in touch with your friends, that's something you're going to want to be part of.

Well the sonys just in video games comment was a bit silly, sony were selling TVs and other electric equipment way before the PS1 was even released.

Exactly what I thought when I read the article, do they really REALLY expect us to believe their comment? I mean sure Nokia (as far as I know) only do mobile phones, but Sony do not do only games.

Now that I come to think of it, maybe they meant to say Nintendo, because apart from games, I can't think of what else they do - not that being only games is a bad thing.

Yeah if they meant nintendo it'd fit at least, you can't go to a decent electrical goods store without seeing tons of sony products.

That would make sense if they had a need to even bring Nintendo into it

Whats bad about only being in video games?

And Bill Gates needs to think before he speaks.

Microsoft do much less than Sony... They are practically a lazy company.

How so? The computers built by Sony run on Microsoft's product. The servers that power Sony's website are probably running a version of Windows as well.

Hell, the spreadsheet and presentation software that Sony use are probably included in Microsoft Office.

While I agree that Bill's comment is absurd (I don't understand where he got the idea from), it's even more ridiculous to call Microsoft a "lazy" company.

I think your statement is completely wrong, Microsoft is far from lazy.

Yeah 1 operating once every 5 years, usually a rip of something Mac released 2 years before they did and a new office package when they make a new OS, other than that their console is really the only true venture that they actually had to work super hard on... Where as Sony are in phone, tv's, computers, games consoles, games development and are even a massive movie studio... Microsoft pale in comparison to Sony.

What the hell? Only videogames? Whatever Gates is smoking, I want some of that shit too.

And the last time I checked, Sony is a far richer company then Microsoft. I doubt all that came from the Playstation franchise. That just goes to show that Sony has been producing electronics for ages now and have been very successful.

    Ummm... maybe.

I read that it generates more revenues and stuff.

You probably shouldn't believe everything you read. In its simplest sense, computers run the world and Microsoft runs the computer industry. But anyway, Gates had to mean something else when he said Sony is only into games..right? I know he dropped out of college, but he's not stupid.

        Cdemon Aug 1, 07
Exactly, but what could he possibly mean?
        • 0
          iLLmatic Aug 1, 07
The only thing I could think of is he is saying Sony is a one trick pony, but not literally. He also said that many of Microsoft's competitors were/are only experts in one field, which is something they try to stay away from. Maybe he is saying that gaming is the only thing that Sony is excelling in, but even that doesn't make sense, because we all know Sony makes (and sells) top of the line digital devices. Who knows what the hell he was saying.

roy the swordsman Aug 1, 07
Oh I see. Well then maybe it makes more money a year than Microsoft, but I don't think it will ever have as much money as Microsoft in total.

Heh, looks like Illmatic beat me to the post again. But yeah I don't think he meant they only sell games. Especially since he also said "Now they're [the competitors] not one-product companies".

Well once again it shows you the maturity level of Bill. Sad, Why don't you stop bashing sony and fix your systems.

It's not just Microsoft. All 3 companies seem to enjoy taking swipes at each other. It's becoming like a political campaign. They're spending more and more time trying to show the flaws of the competition instead of showing what they are offering.

Unlike MS sony has been fixing there problems. I mean 6 million worldwide speaks for it self.

Microsoft HAS been fixing their problems. Sure it took a while, but they were busy releasing an incompetent operating system. =P

Um they haven't fix there problem yet BA. Until the new heatsinks and chips come it won't happen. Also i don't think it will help MS anyway. Just look at the sales the PS3 has done. 5,000% in amazon for the 80GB console wow.

It is nice to hear that Microsoft have something in the works that might make gaming become into a new genre, maybe they are making a non FPS game for the console =]

Xbox Handheld, it has to come in the end, doesnt it ^^

    Seventh Blade Aug 2, 07
I can almost guarantee if Microsoft is producing an Xbox Handheld, in will undoubtedly be a complete failure. Keep in mind that I say this with no factual evidence behind my statement, but just the mere sound of Xbox Handheld makes me think of the recently posted 10 worst-selling handheld consoles article.

      Supernouva Aug 2, 07
Yea, I wouldn't recommend it either for Microsoft. Although the Zune is a big success for MS in the handheld department, who knows, maybe they'll take the same road Apple did and begin to produce cell phones. MS does have some pretty neat technology, which could probably revolutionize some of the electronics we use today.

Agreed. Think before you say a word there Bill. Get out of your Microsoft crazed house and learn more about your competitors or more so Sony.

That has made me lose respect I had in Bill Gates, saying Sony just do video games hey hmmmm. No point saying why not as other people have already mentioned why, but yeah, that was low.

May i add video games is more than Microsoft do, they don't even make video games they publish them because they know forewell they could not make a sucessful game, Sony make sucessful games all the time and publish even more succesful games... They also make sucessful movies, world reknowned tv's, awesome cell phones and state of the art PC hardware that should not be scoffed at, may i add they also make sound systems, surround sound systems, DVD and Blu-Ray hardware without Sony the face of enteratinment today would be different... What can we say about Microsoft without Windows, Mac would be the leader most certainly and Mac would probably be pushing stable software aswell as a perfect gaming platform.
