Treyarch doesn't want to loose the competition and claims they still in. After having declared Infinity Ward wasn't working on a "new engine", Treyarch wanted to calm down the situation saying they are working on an improved version of the engine.

Treyarch confirmed they are working hard on a new project but they keep working to improve the CoD engine. They also declared that CoD Engine (the IW Engine) can be updated to compete the Frostbite 2.0 engine.

I'd hope it cant. IMO COD is becoming so annoying. A game every 6 months, with several overpriced DLC map packs in between. And all you get with each new game is are maybe some new guns, lackluster campaign hyped beyond recognition and even more twisted/warped gameplay. Oh, and a coop mode (which was W@W's only saving grace - because it worked so well) of some kind.

I'd gladly have something kill COD. Aside from it's massive sales it has an effect on the industry. Developers are so often copying mechanics and gameplay ideas from it to incorporate into their FPS games so they can stay afloat in face of the recession. I don't want to play a rehash of COD every mother*bleep*ing game.

What I find apalling is that each time a COD is released, critics seem to completely forget that there are already nearly-identical COD games preceding it, and continue to praise how good everything is and how innovative everything is.

COD was old since COD4. Every game since then has been a repeat with few changes; if anything they've become worse. So how they continue to manage these high scores confounds me. Not to mention, as mentioned, they don't seem to want to improve anything technologically.

No it can't and Infinity Ward have even stated that they aren't updating the engine and that whatever they make will not be as good as Battlefield 3. They have already said this.. In fact they said this about 3 weeks ago that they know that they won't be able to compete with Battlefield 3. Though at least this time they aren't updating not through being lazy, but because all the legal stuff with Activision has left Infinity Ward a mere 5-6 months to make an entire game.

yep, i dont think IW/Treyarch will be able to pull themselves out of the fire this time with MW3. though of course Activision will spend millions on advertising the crap out of it in hopes of overshadowing Battlefield 3, but dont forget EA has money to throw around too.
