why on earth would they even consider to remove the online portion of GoW? If only to make themselves look like asses.

If you had looked at the article you would've realized that they never even considered it; the website hosting the article simply asked an employee and he got back to them that they hadn't even discussed it, but they were in fact staying online.

Even if they did want to take the servers down, they would not be "making themselves look like asses"... It's been five years and this is a business; if it was no longer worth it to keep the servers online then they would take them down because that's the nature of the business. I as a customer certainly do not want the cost of maintaining something that's no longer worth maintaining to be reflected in the price of the videogames I purchase.

I did look at the article and I'm saying why would they even consider it, because Gears of War 1 is still popular and closing the servers on that would cause an uproar especially when all the other games from that year (or older) still are being played online.

They did the same for Halo. The Halo 2 servers were closed, Halo 3 and Reach servers still up.

So, even though they aren't, closing the GOW servers to leave GOW2 and GOW3 servers up wouldn't be that strange

That was completely different. Halo 2 is an xbox original and Microsoft decided to shut down ALL of the original xbox live servers, not just halo 2. Gears of War on the other hand is a still popular and played xbox 360 game.
