The anticipated release for Hot Shots Golf 5 did wonders for the PS3. Its helped sell the millionth PS3 in japan and doubled its weekly sales. Still the PS3 is behind in sales compared to the Wii.
The anticipated release of Hot Shots Golf 5 for PlayStation 3 more than doubled sales of Sony's game console this week in Japan, which turned out to be the final boost it needed to get over one million units.
A momentous landmark, but far off the mark from what Sony expected. Had you suggested at the PS3's launch that Sony would be logging their millionth domestic sale in August -- ten months later -- you'd have been laughed out of the room.
It's being noted all around that Hot Shots Golf did well for a PlayStation 3 game, which is a compliment of the for-a-fat-person-you-don't-sweat-much variety. It moved over 150,000 units, which is one of the biggest PS3 game launches yet. But it was handily outdone by Mario Party 8 on Wii, a far less popular series.
In fact, Hot Shots Golf is arguably Sony's biggest internal Japanese-developed franchise for the domestic market. And I doubt it's going to have much of an effect besides this small bump in sales, which still wasn't enough to equal even half of Wii's weekly numbers.

How is a party series with 8 games (AND with one of the most popular characters in the World) less popular than golf series with 5 games?
Wii Sales > PS3 Sales
Wii Price > PS3 Price
Which MIGHT JUST BE the main reasons why the game outsold much more than Hot Shots Golf, eh?
I'm not gonna argue with the facts, but the author doesn't have to be a *bleep*ing prick about it and stomp on that small little victory by being a JUST A BIT biased by comparing it to the Wii's obvious success. Hey, here's a thought, since you just wanted to talk about Hot Shots Golf and it's after effects...how about leaving the Wii out of it...since it's quite apparent that it's totally irrelevant to the whole thing.
Anyway, if hot shots golf did this, wait until Tekken and Metal Gear comes out (both are very popular in Japen) in America as well. The PS3's sales are going to go sky high.
If that was the reasons fair enough =/
I thought the xbox had this game as well. But this is good for Sony.
