Some of you may have heard of DARPA. This is a competition to see who can make the best car that drives itsself. Many teams take a production vehicle and equip it with cameras, sensors, GPS systems, and the cars have to drive themselves to a destination.... safely.

Never one to back down from any challenge, Axion Racing's Team Leader Bill Kehaly expects great things from his team's Sony PS3 console. "We felt having cars drive themselves was getting a little too easy, so we threw the Sony PlayStation into our bag of tricks," joked Kehaly. The PS3 joins Axion's cadre of Dell computers, SICK laser finders, Bumblebee stereo cameras, and FLIR infrared cameras all guided by twin Navcom Starfire GPS units. A Northrop Grumann LN-270 INS uses the earth's inertia to help keep Spirit on track during any GPS multitasking issues.

Wow but how does the PS3 fit into the car, like what does it actually do?

The processor is used to calculate all the information that the car is taking in from the cameras, sensors, and lasers, and is in charge of what the car does.

If people can fit into a car, a PS3 can lol.

I'd like to control my car with Six Axis... I rather it be a plane so I wouldn't crash it as easy... I'd have more room to experiment.

It is a really nice idea, but sounds far too complicated. Mind you, it would certainly go a long way to justifying its price tag if the PS3 had the ability to chauffeur the owner.

What can you say the PS3 is a powerhouse and functions with everything. Very revolutionize the way of consoles.

Revolutionize the way of consoles? You think after this Microsoft and Nintendo are thinking about making their consoles powerful enough use it for self-automated car? I highly doubt they are.

Interesting, nice to see the guys competing in this to think outside of the box and choose to use a game console to help power up their vehicle.

Very thoughtful for whoever thought up the idea and made it all work. Very ingenius and it'd be cool to see on of these power up.

I'll drive my mom to work from my house. She can sleep in the car, while I watch the tv screen, and drive the thing to work.

So this is not acturally the Playstation 3 drives you to work, it is a chip within it is a part of multiple other chips which helps record and process information
