Looks like the rumour going on about games taking advantage of the Xbox 360 hard drive has been denounced by Microsoft. Most games will only require a memory unit to play, but some others will require a hard drive for the full experience.

"Every game will work with every Xbox 360 system," a Microsoft spokesman told GamePro when asked about the "Hard Drive Required" sticker. "But just like some games will require you to have a Memory Unit to save games, some games will require you to have a Hard Drive to experience them."

For example, gamers can't fully experience the critically acclaimed Oblivion without at least a memory card to save one's progress the representative explained. It is still unclear how a lack of hard drive might affect the gameplay experience outside of game saves, however.

An estimated 20 percent of the total Xbox 360 install base own the Core model without hard drive.

Another problem for the 360. But it won't be too bad.

How is this a problem? Did I read the same article?

Supernouva, did you miss this part?

"But just like some games will require you to have a Memory Unit to save games, some games will require you to have a Hard Drive to experience them."

Actually Cdemon, that quote contradicts what the whole point of this thing was about. And the memory card compared to HDD comparison is complete nonsense.

A Memory Unit is simply for saving games you don't need a memory card to play ("experience") a game.

In this case, you do need a Hard Drive to play ("experience") some games.

      So that's bullshit.

So really this means nothing if not bad.

It doesn't, really. If you don't have a storage device and go to play Oblivion, chances are you're not going to experience 1% of the game.

Like I said, they're probably talking about games with features or options that'll require the hard drive, such as Crackdown's co-op.

No Cdemon, that's very very different and you know it. That's a completely bullshit comparison don't try to argue anything otherwise. While I agree that they should utilize the HDD anyway they can, they shouldn't make nonsense comments like these and just do away completely with the core 360.

I think you're focusing on the wrong thing. Regardless of whether or not you think the memory card comparison is legitimate, they've stated that every game will work on every console, but some will require an HDD to get the full experience.

I've yet to see a quote that states that people without an HDD won't be able to play these games at all. Like I said, they'll probably be limited in features/options.

I have to agree with volacide, on this one.

How is it a problem people? It's a slight inconveniance I guess but that's all, nothing much. If the games are getting better and better and a Hardrive is now becoming more important to own because of this then fair enough, gamers that want to play the best games should understand this and invest in a hardrive if they see fit. They don't NEED to know and I'm sure will experience 99% of entertainment of what gamers with a hardrive get/

People actually bought the CORE? Cheapskates. They don't even sell those things over here anymore, only the ones with the hard drive.

I don't get this, is it because their DVDs can hold hardly any data?
    • 0
      volacide Aug 6, 07
That's not what this issue deals with no, it has to do with the fact that games potentially run better when taking data straight off a HDD rather than a disc of some kind.

Can't see this being a massive problem, mainly just a incovinance to players, but I guess it might push more of them to get the Hard Drive I guess.
