Wii Advertisements Appear in Wave Race 64

WiiVolve | August 06, 2007 | News | Wii
Was Nintendo hinting at future consoles with Wii and DS ads eleven years ago in their Wave Race franchise? Something that we have all overlooked when we were playing our Nintendo 64s? Or is this just a mean hoax meant to be played on gullible Nintendo fanboys? Click in to find out!
You may be scratching your head wondering how ads for future consoles are in a Nintendo 64 game. Did Nintendo predict the future? Nah, it's a graphic swap. The original version had ads for Kawasaki, but since Nintendo doesn’t have the license anymore they had to alter the game.

As you can see they replaced the banners with ads for the Wii and the Nintendo DS Lite. While this is a minor change it shows Nintendo is capable of altering the rom data for the virtual console releases if they please.

Well you know the Virtual Console re-releases old games that came out years and years ago onto the Wii right? Well back when the original Wave Race 64 came out there were Kawasak ads in the game, however now years later Nintendo don't have Kawasak license and therefore have had to edit the game to add in new ads.

The point of this article is proving that Nintendo can modify the ganes being released onto the Virtual Console on the Wii if they need to, which is interesting.

I was playing this game on Wii and I was surprised as hell to see this. If they can do this to Virtual Console games then they can put online play into some too.

This is a good point, we've seen that it's possible to edit the games and that therefore means there could may well be a way to add online play into some of the olden day classics?

This is a mere graphic swap. This is not hard to do. Do not look further into it.

Pretty cool how they can still edit the older games like this after all this time, but I don't know whether they'll go as far as adding online play. It is old code though, will be very easy for them to edit.

They could not legally keep the Kawasaki ads in the game. Nintendo was forced to change this game. We always knew Nintendo could edit the games, but the question still remains whether or not Nintendo is willing to give us extra content for the old games.

Highly doubtful IMO, especially if its from a third party comapany. If its a Mario game or Metroid or something, than yeah MAYBE, but I just dont see it happening.

Yup agreed and honestly the point of classic games is that they are classics not updated versions really.

    Interesting...

Hopefully it'll only be used to deal with legal issues like the advertising thing, though. The classics should really be left as they are.
