PSU: Real Story Behind Rockstar/Sony Rumor

Linkin Park Fan | August 12, 2007 | News | PC Playstation 3 Misc
Justin Pinter, a PSU official, gives a full detailed account on the events that led up to the "rumour" that was posted on the site regarding Sony's supposed new relationship with Rockstar.

It turned out when Sony had invited journalists out for dinner. They talked about rumors and one of them was the rockstar being bought out by sony. He then talked to another journalist about the conversation and he had taken it as a fact and not as a rumor. He posted the article and that was the begin of all of it.
Wednesday night, Sony took all of us press and media folks out to dinner at the Tengu restaurant in Santa Monica. While sitting amongst my table of journalists and eating delicious asian sushi, I asked what were some of the rumors they had heard circulating in the industry. We all talked about Bioshock, Tivo, video on demand, and then eventually made our way to the recent talk of Rockstar going exclusive with Sony after GTAIV with such titles as LA Noire, and the secret PS3 title. The talk lead to someone stating that they knew that not only was the rumor correct but there was more to it. Basically from what I heard, Sony was taking Rockstar under its wing. Now I don't know if that means they are buying them or if they are supporting them as if they were someone like Naughty Dog or Insomniac.

What happened was then after dinner I got on MSN IM and discussed it with my fellow staffers; telling them about the day with Sony and some of the stuff I heard. One of them took the rumors, and posted it as news on PSU the next morning and everything went from there. Our editors had no idea what had happened and I woke to journalists questioning me about it. Big mess up and misunderstanding.

Anyways, hopefully this kind of clears it up for you. Hopefully you can forgive us and we can move on from here. Thanks!

From my point of view and not that of PSU's: I honestly think its happening from what I have heard, but I can't give names.

So, what's this mean then? Why is everyone getting mad at him if he heard from a Sony rep that they're "taking Rockstar under their wing" and it's the truth? Only reason I could see his whole PSU company getting upset with him about a "missunderstanding" would be if he was incorrect, right?

This left me just as confused as before, unless I'm *bleep*ed and just can't read.

It means that sony are trying to buy Rockstar and all Rockstar titles will be PS3. Well i think. If it happens though it'll be great for sony.

Uh no...Sony was only talking about rumors to some journalists and one of them happened to be about buying Rockstar...unfortunately someone took this as fact and started the rumor mill...as far as I understand.

It doesn't entirely rule out Sony making Rockstar a 2nd or even 1st party developer though

Good to find out this is a rumour, Microsoft losing Rockstar would be a big blow for us and a big gain for Sony.

Too much rumours go around these days, I guess we shouldn't believe everything we read.

This is good to know, however, it is still unfortunate that Sony lost its Downloadable Online Content exclusivity..
