Sony might have been able to avoid the hacking attack that shut down their network earlier this year. GamerGaia has the news on the lawsuit that Sony is now facing.

The entire world is more than aware of the breach that crippled Sony’s online service, yet no-one has yet been blamed for the attack. However, Sony may have made a potentially fatal mistake that could have ultimately led to the devastating PSN hack this past April.

wow, people are still trying to blame Sony after all the other gaming companies have been hacked lately. Still, blaming Sony for getting hacked is like blaming a woman for getting raped. Get with it guys...

I still don't think that makes you the one at fault.

It makes you an idiot, but someone else is still responsible for stealing your car.

But it is sort of an odd question here, with no real right or wrong answers. It's not so black and white, and I can see how someone would disagree with me.

As for the lawsuit part of this, I think a better analogy for that would be leaving the keys in your friends car. He trusted you to take care of it, but it gets stolen because of your carelessness. He has every right to be pissed at you, sure, but I still don't see how he could sue you if you weren't the one who actually stole anything. You're a shitty friend, but not a criminal.

No doubt, and I agree completely. I don't think anyone has the right to sue Sony (thanks to an agreement you can't really avoid but that's business), but I'm also not surprised that there are those trying.

I'm not even saying Sony isn't a victim, they shouldn't have to pay for security, and in a perfect world they wouldn't. It's not though, and you gotta lock up your shit, or someone will(and did) take it.

If the woman runs around a group of unrepentant rapists without any clothes on and has her legs wide open and pointed towards them then yeah, it's her fault.

Not to say the hackers aren't to blame, but to say Sony is blameless is just as stupid.

Agreed, as is comparing a bunch of neckbeards stealing login info to rape.

I think this analogy isn't really applicable here.

That analogy is equivalent to Sony having no security whatsoever and literally showing people who would want to hack them how their system can be compromised. You're saying Sony pretty much said, "Hey! This is what you want! Come get it!"

          That's not what happened.

Even if your analogy was correct, the woman in it still doesn't deserve to be sued, unless it was for what was apparently public indecency, or defying the laws of human biology by running with her legs wide open.

If you wanted to compare this to rape... I find it a bit difficult, but I'll do my best.

I'd say this situation is more like a scantily dressed woman with no mace/taser/etc walking in a rough neighborhood getting raped. She's not exactly asking for it, but she has poor means of defending herself, which makes it easier for someone to rape her, but it still doesn't make her at fault if it happens.

She's a bit of an idiot, but she didn't break any laws.

"Playstation 3, it only does everything."

To a hacker, that's an invite. And it's not like walking through a bad neighbourhood, it's like walking through a rape-zone. The clothes and wide-open legs part I'll give you, but this isn't a bad neighbourhood situation; the internet is full of hackers and jerks. If something is popular, people will try to hack it. Sony know this, yet took stupid measures.

So, to update the analogy, it's like knowingly walking through a neighbourhood full of rapists and using silly string as protection.

Haha, you're right about the rape thing. Shadowguard was the first to mention it. It's odd how your "analogy was a fail" when he tried it first. Apparently it was only okay when he said it.

wrong, rape is unwanted sexual intercourse. Your example is a fail. Sony is the victim, plain and simple. Putting any blame on a victim is just stupid.

Yeah, I find it sort of hard to compare this to rape, but I did my best. Though, I don't think you're talking to me, but I digress...

I still think I can see what Hideo was trying to say, and I personally think his analogy was an exaggeration of the situation, but not a total miss.

Sony's network should have been better protected. However, I don't see how Sony broke any laws by being hacked and, unless I'm mistaken, someone has to break a law before someone else can take legal action against him/her and actually have a legitimate case.

There is the idea, that some have, about how you trusted Sony with your info, and they lost it, and therefore they did something wrong and should be punished. Honestly, though, I think that any time you give your information to anyone, you should know that it could be lost. As much as it seems like someone else should be responsible, I think that you are ultimately responsible for your information.

The anger and disappointment at Sony is where opinion really comes in. I feel that there's really no right or wrong way to feel about the situation, but I honestly think that the idea of suing Sony over this is definitively bullshit.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, with some of the crazy lawsuits being somehow successful these days, I wouldn't be too surprised if Sony got sued out of business over this.

The world is so *bleep*ing stupid and petty sometimes.

EDIT 2: Damn that was a long post. I need a *bleep*ing life.

Hey, I agree it's stupid to compare hacking to rape.

And guess what? YOU were the one who did it. FFS

You also forgot to capitalise the start of your sentences.

So you think that if a woman acts slutty, someone forcing her to have sex with them against her will (regardless of whether she's acting like a slut) isn't rape?

Dude, that's just wrong. You're sick.

Hideo, he won. Give it up already.

He said it plain and clear, "you was not even rape". He's got a good point there.

I think the other hacks prove how poor Sony's security was as for the most part the other companies didn't lose much if any data. These are companies that don't need great security as all they have is emails and passwords, nothing like that Sony had to store and yet Sony let everything go. So while they weren't entirely to blame, I will say that Sony's security should have been better.

Actually other companies have lost a ton of information, but they weren't accompanied with extended down time either.
