North American PlayStation 3 To Lose Hardware-based Backward Compatibility

North American PS3s may lose hardware based backwards compatibility. Why? Because Sony wants to push PS3 content and get owners to spend money on some of their new features and "quit living off the greats of yester-year." So if you plan on getting a PS3, like myself, you better buy one sometime soon, because you may not be able to use PS1 and PS2 hardware and maybe even software with the newer models.
I was perfectly happy waiting to get a PS3 until some more games actually came out that I wanted, comfy in the fact that we (the U.S.) weren't going to lose hardware backward compatibility from the system, which is as big a factor for me in getting a PS3 eventually as having DVD playback functionality in the PS2 at launch. We launched with hardware compatibility; why take it out now? The recent price drop from $600 to $500 for the 60GB PS3 didn't phase me either since I still didn't want many of the offerings currently available for the system. Here's the official line from Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA):

"The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated."

Turns out that the price drop is really only being done to get people to buy up all the "premium" systems that didn't sell at launch and the cheaper 20GB "core" SKU that was phased out months ago. Only the remaining 60GB PS3s are going to be available at this price and then the new 80GB model would go back up to $600 with Motorstorm packed in, but again, I was indifferent towards the news.

Good job, Sony! Nicely done, you can now remove the backwards compatibility with PS and PS2 games, this is ought to make the console cost less and sell better.

People are getting so *bleep*ing STUPID.

The 80 gig PS3 uses software emulation to run PS1/PS2 games, and nearly 80% of previous gen games WORK! They aren't getting rid of it completely, they're simply switching to software rather than hardware emulation.

I said they should completely remove it. Not that it's not there now

It will cost less and at a very small price to pay in terms of compatibility too. As Guticb said, while it isn't as good as the hardward BC, it's still WAY better than the 360's which is a complete joke.

It's the same with the Xbox 360/Xbox relationship. Xbox 360 has absolutely no hardware based backwards compatibility with the Xbox, and I'd say MS is making a big profit off of that.

At least you got backwards compatiblity over there to start with, the much more expensive European PS3 has never had it and the emulation software for the old games is pretty bad, I tried several old ps1 and sp2 games and they had graphical glitches, for example one game had a weird motion blur in cut scenes.

This is a rumor, PS3 was most important about backwards capabilities.

No it can, the emotion chip was able for the PS3 to play previous games like PS1 and PS2, but due to the cost of it, they got rid of it and used what guticb said switching to software updates rather than using Hardware. Its actually a better solution which in the end lowers the cost of the system. Who ever told you that was completely stupid. And knows nothing about PS3 and the emotion chip.

It doesn't phase me at all, I still have my PS2 hooked up for if I need to back-track. Just need to switch a couple of wires right in front of me for the PS3. So backwards-compatbility ot no backwards compatibility, I'm able to play the older games.

Why do people even care about backwards compatibility?

I've sold all my games, I mean sure some of them where great but when you've played a game through 10 times and brand new titles which are even better are coming out why would you want to play PS2 and PS1 games?

some classics like shadow of the colossus and ICO just can't be sold. I want my fix of it whenever I want. Same with Okami and God of War.

Also FF7 is a legend and a classic, who doesn't want to reply that or FF8. or another game for that matter.

Some fan boy probably wrote this.

I doubt they would remove the ENTIRE backwards compatibility, that would be dumb.

Why would they use blu ray, and cell processors but they wouldn't be able to play last gen games?

    That's just *bleep*ed.

If this is true then it's a very bad move from Sony that would upset tons of PS3 owners and even more potential PS3 buyers. I will cross my fingers for you PS3 fanboys that this does indeed turn out to be a false rumour.
