With the likes of Halo 3, BioShock, BlackSite: Area 51, Medal of Honor: Airborne, Clive Barker's Jericho, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption all inbound to target, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has its work cut out in the FPS genre. Can it rise to the top amid such hot competition? Take a look at these latest screenies and make your own decisions.

Activision has just released a fresh batch of screenshots for the fourth entry in the Call of Duty series, subtitled Modern Warfare - and they look jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

The title's plot is told from the perspectives of a British SAS operative, a Russian Spetsnaz commando, and American Force Recon Marines and Navy SEALs in the Middle East. They follow the evil intentions of Zakhaev, a Russian nationalist intent on re-claiming his homeland as a Soviet state. Obviously the UK and US do not want this to happen, and so they all sit down with a cup of tea and a biscuit to sort things out in a calm and democratic manner. Not really - much warring commences.

If those are screenshots of the campaign, it seems weird to me that some of the shots have your allies just named "Soldier 1" instead of having actual names like the older Call of Duty games.
